    Hexanuclear tantalum bromide cluster units [{Ta6Bri 12}La 6] (i = inner, a = apical, L = ligand OH or H2O) are embedded into SiO2 nanoparticles by a reverse microemulsion (RM) based method. [{Ta6Bri 12}Bra 2 (H2O)a 4]·nH2O (noted TBH) and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) are used as the starting cluster compound and the precursor of SiO2, respectively. The RM system in this study consists of the n-heptane (oil phase), Brij L4 (surfactants), ethanol, TEOS, ammonia solution and TBH aqueous sol. The size and morphology of the product namely {Ta6Br12}@SiO2 nanoparticles are analyzed by HAADF-STEM and EDS mappings. The presence and integrity of {Ta6Br12} in the SiO2 nanoparticles are evidenced by EDS mapping, ICP-OES/IC and XPS analysis. The optical properties of {Ta6Br12}@SiO2 nanoparticles are analyzed by diffuse reflectance UV-vis spectroscopy, further evidencing the integrity of the embedded {Ta6Br12} and revealing their oxidation state. Both {Ta6Br12}2+ and {Ta6Br12}3+ are found in SiO2 nanoparticles, but the latter is much more stable than the former. The by-products in this RM-based synthesis, as well as their related factors, are also discussed.

    The electronic and structural characteristics of the octahedral molybdenum cluster-based ternary compound, Cs2[Mo6Cl14], were investigated based on density functional theory (DFT) and subsequent comparisons with experimentally observed results. The geometry optimization and band structure calculations of Cs-2[Mo6Cl14] were performed using three standard functionals: local density approximation, Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) as a generalized gradient approximation, and PBE revised for solid compounds (PBEsol). The validity of the calculated results was experimentally examined via X-ray powder diffraction, ultravioletvisible (UV-vis) diffuse reflection, and X-ray photoemission spectra (XPS) measurements. PBEsol was found to show the best performance in terms of reproducing the experimentally refined lattice structure of the compound. The calculated band gap energy (E-g) was consistent with the value evaluated from the UV-vis measurement. Furthermore, the XPS valence spectrum of the compound was well reproduced by the calculated projected density of state weighted with the photoionization probabilities of Al K-alpha.     The crystallization of a high-purity hexamolybdenum cluster chloride, Cs-2[Mo6Cl14], was investigated with the aim of improving its intrinsic properties, including optical properties. In particular, we used the hydrophilicities of alcoholic solvents to purify Cs-2[Mo6Cl14] by dehydration. The precursor, trigonal Cs-2[Mo6Cl14] with water impurities, or monoclinic Cs-2[Mo6Cl14]center dot H2O, was dispersed in methanol (MeOH), ethanol (EtOH), or 1-propanol (1-PrOH) to induce recrystallization during stirring. As a result, regardless of the precursor, Cs-2[Mo6Cl14] crystallized from EtOH and 1-PrOH, while Cs-2[Mo6Cl14]center dot H2O crystallized from MeOH, which indicates that EtOH and 1-PrOH behave as dehydrating agents during recrystallization. Subsequent characterization by X-ray diffraction, thermal desorption, and infrared spectroscopic techniques confirmed that the Cs-2[Mo6Cl14] crystallized from EtOH or 1-PrOH, particularly 1-PrOH, is of high purity (fewer inserted water molecules) and high crystallinity.     The integration by a solution deposition process of tantalum octahedral clusters in multifunctional nanocomposite materials and devices for smart windows is investigated for the first time in this study. Two [Ta(6)Bri(12)](n+) cluster core-based highly transparent visible UV and NIR filters are realized. Films are fabricated by incorporation of clusters in a polymer matrix and coating them on an ITO substrate. The electrochromic cell consists of a Ta-6-based electrolyte inserted between two transparent conductive electrodes. In both cases, the modification of the absorption properties in the visible and NIR spectral range is possible by altering and controlling the oxidation state of the tantalum cluster. The stabilization of reduced [Ta(6)Bri(12)](2+) or oxidized [Ta(6)Bri(12)](3+/4+) species leads to green-emerald or slight brown filters having a slight or a strong red-NIR absorption respectively. Their efficiency in energy saving is estimated by the determination of figures of merit and color coordinates. This highlights that [Ta(6)Bri(12)](n+) -based composites are promising absorbers for energy saving applications.

    The electronic and crystal structures of Cs-2[Mo6X14] (X = Cl, Br, I) cluster-based compounds were investigated by density functional theory (DFT) simulations and experimental methods such as powder X-ray diffraction, ultraviolet visible spectroscopy, and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS). The experimentally determined lattice parameters were in good agreement with theoretically optimized ones, indicating the usefulness of DFT calculations for the structural investigation of these clusters. The calculated band gaps of these compounds reproduced those experimentally determined by UV vis reflectance within an error of a few tenths of an eV. Core-level XPS and effective charge analyses indicated bonding states of the halogens changed according to their sites. The XPS valence spectra were fairly well reproduced by simulations based on the projected electron density of states weighted with cross sections of Al K-infinity, suggesting that DFT calculations can predict the electronic properties of metal-cluster-based crystals with good accuracy.

    We report here the synthesis, the crystal structure and the luminescent properties of the new cluster compounds Cs2Mo6Cl14 center dot H2O and Cs2Mo6Br14 center dot H2O. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction performed on Cs2Mo6Cl14 center dot H2O indicates that the compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c with refined cell parameters a = 19.578 , b = 15.151 , c = 9.347 , and beta = 115.64A degrees. The structure can be described from discrete anionic cluster units arranged in a "A-A'-A-A'" pseudo prismatic stacking parallel to (b, c) plane with both Cs+ cations and water molecules located between the layers. Moreover, the centric character of the trigonal structure of Cs2Mo6Cl14 was also studied by combination of single-crystal X-ray diffraction and both X-ray and neutron powder diffraction. The results suggest an important influence of the sample preparation on the symmetry of the crystal structure. The crystal structure relationship between the anionic cluster unit arrangements in Cs2Mo6Cl14 and Cs2Mo6Cl14 center dot H2O is discussed.     We herein report the structure-property relationships of the octahedral molybdenum metal cluster compound, Cs-2[Mo6Cl14]. Using purified samples, we attempted to determine if Cs-2[Mo6Cl14] possesses crystalline polarity. Heat treatment was performed prior to characterization to remove impurities, as X-ray powder diffraction and Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy studies suggested the unit cell of Cs-2[Mo6Cl14] expanded with the insertion of water molecules and/or hydroxyl moieties. Geometry optimization and total energy calculations by density functional theory calculations were conducted to determine whether Cs-2[Mo6Cl14] crystallizes in centrosymmetric (P (3) over bar 1c) or non-centrosymmetric (P31c) space groups. Furthermore, the results of the optical studies, along with the absence of a second harmonic generation, and the observation of a strong third harmonic generation, supported the hypothesis that inversion symmetry exists in the Cs-2[Mo6Cl14] lattice. The space group of Cs-2[Mo6Cl14] was therefore identified as P (3) over bar 1c symmetry. (C) 2016 The Japan Society of Applied Physics

    Calcium alginate gel has some unique properties, such as the capability to keep the drugs, bioadhesiveness, safety, and low cost. The purpose of this study is to determine whether calcium alginate gel can be used as a matrix of electrodes for iontophoresis (IOP). We measured the concentration of lidocaine transported from calcium alginate gels with various concentrations of alginic acid using an in vitro experimental cell with square-wave alternating current (AC) application. Temperature and pH changes were also determined during AC-IOP. The results revealed that lidocaine was released from calcium alginate gels at concentrations nearly 1.71-fold larger at 5 V, 60 min after AC application than in the case of passive diffusion. Lidocaine transport depended on the alginic acid concentration in the gels. Although there were slight increases in temperature and pH, chemical and thermal burns were not severe enough to be a concern. In conclusion, the calcium alginate gel can be used as a possible matrix for IOP electrodes.
