    初年度(2021年度)は、富士山透視観測のための宇宙線ミュオン観測装置を製作するための基本設計と製造メーカーへの発注業務を、当初の計画としていた。当該観測装置は、市販品が無く、「対面」による綿密かつ高度な打ち合わせにより仕様を決定しながら開発を進める性格のものである。しかしながら新型コロナウイルス感染症の蔓延による大学内の強い行動制限のため、製造メーカーとの「対面」による打ち合わせが困難であったことや、その他の社会情勢による半導体不足などの影響を総合的に考慮し、製造メーカーへの製作依頼を断念した。
    このため大学内のワークショップを利用して研究代表者(居島)が製作することに方針を転換した。1年先行する研究(基盤S分担)においても同様な事情により、別の仕様のものを本研究代表者(居島)が開発したことから、そのノウハウを転用し本研究用の観測措置を自主開発し得るノウハウは獲得出来ている。
    上記を踏まえ研究計画を練り直し、初年度は、これまでに自主開発すべき観測装置の基本設計を終え、年度末までにプラスチックシンチレータ・波長変換ファイバー・MPPC・FPGAなどの不足が予想される半導体を含む主要な部品の調達を完了した。
    また、すでに稼働中の1号機においては、同じくコロナ禍により行動が制限される中、年間の主要なメンテナンスを4半期に1度程度に抑え、リモート操作により観測を継続している。本研究による別角度からの観測結果と合わせた立体的な解析が期待できる。

    考古班は、岡山大学が作成した岡山市造山古墳3次元測量データ3種類と赤磐市が作成した両宮山古墳の3次元測量データを入手し、それぞれの古墳の測量データがミュオンラジオグラフィにおける解析とシミュレーションに適切な精度を有しているか検討を進めた。造山古墳では3種のデータのうち、より適切なデータを選択した。両宮山古墳では座標データから等高線を復元し、ミュオンラジオグラフィの解析に備えている。岡山市造山古墳のミュオンラジオグラフィ調査に備え、岡山市教育委員会ならびに地元保存会と協議を実施し、基本的に協力を取り付けている。
    ミュオン班の今年度の課題は、3段構造を持つ古墳の中段まで人力で運搬可能なコンパクト可搬型ミュオン検出器の開発である。(1)波長変換ファイバー入りプラスチックシンチレータと光半導体デバイス(MPPC)の組合せによるカウンターの効率と実装法を確認するため、技術的に確立している光電子増倍管と比較してカウンター単体の予備実験を実施し、部品と材料の調達を開始した。(2)露天の測定環境に耐え得る防水、防砂、温調機能を持つ検出器の構造・構成を検討するため、文献調査、福島原発等の検出器開発者らとの情報交換、予備実験を繰り返し、基本設計を進めた。(3)考古班からの詳細情報に基づくシミュレーション解析を進めた。
    本研究費で購入した光電子増倍管、波長変換ファイバー、データ解析用パソコン等を予備実験に活用した。検出器筐体の構造や設置場所の検討に必要な現地環境調査は、所属部署の県外出張自粛要請のために断念した。
    検出器の開発ならびに考古班の作業は基盤Sに引き継いで実施中である。

    Low oxygen concentration or hypoxia plays a crucial role in the diagnosis and treatment of tumours and cancer. Although there are some existing techniques, such as proton magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), for the detection of molecular oxygen in tissues, new non-invasive techniques for directly measuring the extent and spatial distribution of hypoxia in cancerous or tumorous tissues are still needed. In this study, we propose a new non-invasive method using muons that are available in accelerator facilities, such as the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex in Japan and the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in the UK. Unlike existing MRI methods, the proposed muon-based method can be applied without any external magnetic field. With the help of muonium response in solutions, we measured oxygen concentration in the aqueous solutions of various biological materials, such as haemoglobin, albumin, serum, and tris-buffered saline, under controlled molecular oxygen concentrations. The observed relaxation rate pattern of muonium through a fixed oxygen concentration sample and that with a sample concentration of less than 1% oxygen shows that this method may be applicable in detecting molecular oxygen levels in various tissues of the human body. Based on our experimental results, we have estimated the expected muonium spectra in normal physiological concentrations of haemoglobin in blood. Further systematic studies on other biological solutions are required before a potential clinical application of the method is devised.

    In our ZF mu+SR studies of the spin-dependent response to the polarized conduction electrons produced by circularly polarized 830 nm laser light in a semi-metallic and strain-free n-type GaAs (3x10(16) cm(-3) Si), among possible states of positive muon, Mu(-) (mu(+)e(-)e(-)) had been found to take a spin-dependent exchange scattering, while muonium (Mu(0)) at bond-center was found to be insensitive. In order to understand this surprising spin-dependent Mu(-) response, the LF (up to 0.4 T) mu+SR studies were carried out and data is suggesting a contribution of bound electron(s) of Mu(-) Possible mechanisms of the Mu(-) response are given.

    SrTiO3(100)-(root 5 x root 5)-R26.6 surfaces were studied by means of high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. By varying the bias voltage in the occupied state, it was possible to observe the arrangement of titanium and oxygen atoms in the unit cells of a (root 5 x root 5) surface superstructure, which revealed that the TiO2 layer is the terminating plane of the (root 5 x root 5) surface. In the STM images, peculiar protrusions were seen at the oxygen fourfold hollow site responsible for root 5 x root 5 periodicity. The protrusions are asymmetrical in contrast, which would be an important consideration in proposing accurate structural models for (root 5 x root 5) surface superstructures. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V.     Compared to current optical-lever methods adopted in atomic force microscopes, nonoptical methods such as piezoresistive methods and quartz fork methods can be more advantageous due to their smaller installation size and the lack of electromagnetic effects from laser light during electrical conductivity experiments. As a technological demonstration of nonoptical methods, a low-temperature atomic force microscope using piezoresistive cantilevers was developed and operated at liquid-He-4 temperatures (5 K). The cantilever and sample can be transferred from atmosphere to the microscope head operating at low temperatures. Both contact mode and noncontact mode were used for testing the system while carrying out atomic resolution studies on clean Si(111) and clean Si(100) surfaces.     We have developed heavily boron-doped piezoresistive single-crystalline silicon AFM cantilevers which aimed for operating at low temperatures including cryogenic temperature range. The optimization of design to increase the sensitivity and reduce noise at cryogenic temperature is considered by controlling the dopant concentration. The relatively low concentration of 6×10 18 atoms/cm 3 shows the lowest Minimum Detectable Force (MDF) at room temperature (R.T.) by calculation. However, it was predicted that the optimal concentration of dopant was shifted to a higher concentration at cryogenic temperature in MDF by calculation. Firstly we developed AFM cantilevers integrated with piezoresistive elements at the support of the cantilever. Actually the fabricated heavily doped cantilever shows that the sensitivity at cryogenic temperature increased by 1.6 times at 5 K than that at R.T. © 2005 IEEE.

    For in-situ measurements of the local electrical conductivity of well-defined crystal surfaces in ultra-high vacuum, we have developed two kinds of microscopic four-point probe methods. One involves a "four-tip STM prober," in which four independently driven tips of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) are used for measurements of four-point probe conductivity. The probe spacing can be changed from 500 nm to 1 mm. The other method involves monolithic micro-four-point probes, fabricated on silicon chips, whose probe spacing is fixed around several mum. These probes are installed in scanning-electron-microscopy/electron-diffraction chambers, in which the structures of sample surfaces and probe positions are observed in situ. The probes can be positioned precisely on aimed areas on the sample with the aid of piezoactuators. By the use of these machines, the surface sensitivity in conductivity measurements has been greatly enhanced compared with the macroscopic four-point probe method. Then the conduction through the topmost atomic layers (surface-state conductivity) and the influence of atomic steps on conductivity can be directly measured.

    A method to improve the resolution of four-point-probe measurements of two-dimensional (2D) and quasi-2D systems is presented. By mapping the conductance on a dense grid around a target area and postprocessing the data, the resolution can be improved by a factor of approximately 50 to better than 1/15 of the four-point-probe electrode spacing. The real conductance sheet is simulated by a grid of discrete resistances, which is optimized by means of a standard optimization algorithm, until the simulated voltage-to-current ratios converges with the measurement. The method has been tested against simulated data as well as real measurements and is found to successfully deconvolute the four-point-probe measurements. In conjunction with a newly developed scanning four-point probe with electrode spacing of 1.1 mum, the method can resolve the conductivity with submicron resolution.     A probe-positioning method for micro-multi-point probes that can be independently driven is proposed. By the electron-beam lithography technique, we fabricated a 0.5 mmx0.5 mm-sized probe-positioning pattern matrix consisting of 750 nmx750 nm-sized cells. Each cell has 150 nmx150 nm-sized pits that represent a bit array, which specifies its address. Reading the address information on the pattern with the microprobes allowed us not only to determine the probe positions, but also to calibrate the orientation and dimension of each scan.     For in situ measurements of local electrical conductivity of well defined crystal surfaces in ultrahigh vacuum, we have developed microscopic four-point probes with a probe spacing of several micrometres, installed in a scanning-electron - microscope/electron-diffraction chamber. The probe is precisely positioned on targeted areas of the sample surface by using piezoactuators. This apparatus enables conductivity measurement with extremely high surface sensitivity, resulting in direct access to surface-state conductivity of the surface superstructures, and clarifying the influence of atomic steps upon conductivity.

    Electromigration and phase transformation of an ultrathin-Ag film patch deposited on a Cu-precovered incommensurate "5 x 5" phase on Si(111) surface were investigated by in situ ultrahigh-vacuum scanning electron microscopy and microprobe reflection high-energy electron diffraction, and compared with the previous results on the clean and Au-precovered Si(111) surfaces. The film patch spread quite slowly towards the cathode by current apply (and resultant heating), at the initial stage of which the patch area showed a root3 x root3 phase, consisted of Ag-Cu surface alloy, with three-dimensional (3D) islands in it. Later, a phase transformation from the root3 x root3 into a root 21 x root 21 structure proceeded, accompanied with the 3D islands dissolving. These surface alloy formations play a key role in the migration, which is similar to the case of on Au-precovered Si(111) surfaces. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

    To measure electrical conductivity of materials in scales ranging from nanometer to millimeter, a four-point probe system was developed and installed in an ultrahigh-vacuum. scanning electron microscope (UHV-SEM). Each probe, made of a W tip, was independently driven with piezoelectric actuators and a scanner in XYZ directions to achieve precise positioning in nanometer scales. The SEM was used for observing the tips for positioning, as well as the sample surface together with scanning reflection-high-energy electron diffraction capability. This four-point probe system has two kinds of special devices. One is octapole tube-type scanners for tip scanning parallel to the sample surface with negligible displacements normal to the surface. Another is a pre-amplifier which can be switched in current measurement mode between tunnel contact for scanning tunneling microscopy and direct contact for four-point probe method. The electrical resistance of a silicon crystal with a Si(1 1 1)-7 x 7 clean surface was measured with this machine as a function of probe spacing between I mm and I un. The result clearly showed an enhancement of surface sensitivity in resistance measurement by reducing the probe spacing. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

    Microfour-point probes integrated on silicon chips have been fabricated with probe spacings in the range 4-60 mum. They provide a simple robust device for electrical transport measurements at surfaces, bridging the gap between conventional macroscopic four-point probes and scanning tunneling microscopy. Measurements on Si(111) surfaces in ultrahigh vacuum reveal that the Si(111)-root 3x root3-Ag structure induced by a monolayer of Ag atoms has a four-point resistance two orders of magnitude lower than that of the Si(111)-7x7 clean surface. We attribute this remarkable difference to direct transport through surface states, which is not observed on the macroscopic scale, presumably due to scattering at atomic steps.     For in-situ measurements of surface conductivity in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV), we have installed micro-four-point probes (probe spacings down to 4 mum) in a UHV scanning electron microscope (SEM) combined with scanning reflection-high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED). With the aid of piezoactuators for precise positioning of the probes, local conductivity of selected surface domains of well-defined superstructures could be measured during SEM and RHEED observations. It was found that the surface sensitivity of the conductivity measurements was enhanced by reducing the probe spacing, enabling the unambiguous detection of surface-state conductivity and the influence of surface defects on the electrical conduction.

    Anisotropic features of Ag and In electromigration on clean and Au-precovered Si(111) surfaces were studied by in situ scanning electron microscopy in ultrahigh vacuum. It was noted that the migration direction of Ag was determined by both applied direct-current direction and step orientation on the substrate surface; on an Si(111) surface with steps inclined with respect to the current direction, the electromigration direction shows an apparent deviation from the accurate current direction. On clean and Au-precovered Si(111) surfaces with various coverages of Au(within submonolayer range), the migration behaviors of Ag and In drastically changed with Au coverages and showed different diffusion anisotropy (either thermal diffusion and electromigration) depending on the adsorbate surface structures. Particularly, on a beta-root 3 x root 3-Au surface of one monolayer Au coverage, In migrated with the highest mobility across the step bands, whereas In showed only a slow movement on the 7x7 clean surface due to a migration barrier at step edges. This result implied that the beta-root 3 x root 3-Au surface phase served as an intermediate layer for In adatoms migration. On the contrary, Ag showed negligible migration on the beta-root 3 x root 3-Au surface, while the 7x7 surface was the substrate for appreciable migration of Ag atoms. The results are discussed in terms of step-edge barriers in migration and on-terrace migration. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

    Electromigration of Ag on Au-precovered Si(111) surfaces was investigated by in-situ ultrahigh vacuum scanning electron microscopy and mu-probe reflection-high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED). Migration behaviors of a Ag-film patch strongly depended on Au coverage theta(Au) and corresponding surface structures. When theta(Au) < 0.7 monolayer (ML), the patch expanded preferentially towards the cathode to attain a maximum area in which the sum of Ag and Au coverages were always about 1 ML irrespective of theta(Au), resulting in two-dimensional (2D) alloy phases (showing root 3 x root 3 RHEED patterns) with different Au/Ag concentration ratios. The largest expansion of the patch area was achieved on a (5 x 2 + alpha-root 3 x root 3)-Au mixed phase structure (theta(Au) similar to 0.7 ML). However, when theta(Au) > 0.7 ML, the patch expansion was greatly reduced. Especially on the beta-root 3 x root 3-Au surface (theta(Au) similar to 1.0 ML), the patch showed no directional expansion towards the cathode. But Ag atoms were observed to migrate inside the patches on all substrates (including the beta-root 3 x root 3-Au surface) to form 3D islands near terrace edges.
