Current state of research and teaching activities

  • Developments of experimental technology provide us new possibilities to use principles of quantum mechanics for future technologies such as information processing and transport in microscopic level. The developments enable us to control microscopic entities, for example, electrons, atomic nucleus, ions, and photons. But, it is impossible to isolate these entities. These are inevitably affected by their surrounding environments, which are often treated as obstacles to realize quantum technologies. To overcome the difficulties, we need to evaluate the environmental effects from theoretical viewpoints. The theoretical model to include such effects is often termed as a quantum open system. In this laboratory, we struggle to evaluate the environmental effects as well as to propose a new way to adopt such effects on quantum information processing and quantum transport by studying quantum open systems.

Transport phenomena are ubiquitous throughout the science, engineering, and technology disciplines as it concerns energy, mass, charge, and information exchange between systems. In particular, energy transport in the nanoscale regime has attracted significant attention within the physical science community due to its potential to explain complex phenomena like the electronic energy transfer in molecular crystals or the Fenna-Matthews-Olson (FMO)/light harvesting complexes in photosynthetic bacteria with long time coherences. Energy transport in these systems is highly affected by environmental noise but surprisingly not always in a detrimental way. It was recently found that situations exist where noise actually enhances the transport phenomena. Such noise can take many forms, but can be characterised in three basic behaviors: quantum, correlation in time, or space. All have been shown potential to offer an energy transport enhancement. The focus of this work is on quantum transport caused by stochastic environment with spatio-temporal correlation. We consider a multi-site nearest neighbor interaction model with pure dephasing environmental noise with spatio-temporal correlation and show how an accelerated rate for the energy transfer results especially under negative spatial correlation (anti-correlation). Spatial anti-correlation provides another control parameter to help one establish the most efficient transfer of energy and may provide new insights into the working of exciton transport in photosynthetic complexes. Further the usage of spatio-temporal correlated noise may be a beneficial resource for efficient transport in large scale quantum networks.

    We review two kinds of approaches to obtain the complex susceptibility with using the projection operator methods in Schrodinger and Heisenberg picture. In the complex susceptibility, we include the effect of initial correlation between the relevant system and its environment. Using the method in Heisenberg picture, we show a way to obtain the time evolution of a dynamical variable up to higher orders of system-environment interaction. We apply it to a case of low field resonance where a 1/2 spin interacts with a quantum environment. When we assume the spectral function for system-environment interaction to be described by a Lorentzian function, we find a continued fraction form of the memory term, which enables us to evaluate an arbitrary order of system-environment interaction up to infinite orders. We also show that the method in Schrodinger picture can be used to obtain the time evolution of the response function. With the method, we find a systematic way to treat a multiple-spin system under the effects of its environment. We demonstrate the usefulness of the method by applying it to a three-spin system which interacts with a quantum environment in the Ohmic spectral function.

    The method of projection operators, which plays an important role in the field of nonequilibrium statistical mechanics, has been established with the use of the Liouville-von Neumann equation for a density matrix to eliminate irrelevant information from a whole system. We formulate a unified and general projection operator method for dynamical variables. The main features of our formalism parallel those for the Liouville-von Neumann equation. (1) Two types of basic equations, rime-convolution and time-convolutionless decompositions, are systematically obtained without specifying a projection operator. (2) Expansion formulas for both decompositions are also obtained. (3) Problems incorporating a time-dependent Liouville operator can be flexibly treated. We apply the formulas to problems in random frequency modulation and low held resonance. In conclusion, our formalism yields a more direct and easier means of determining the average time evolution of an operator than the one for the Liouville-von Neumann equation.     A systematic damping theoretical formalism is presented to give basic equations of statistical physics. Our formalism naturally yields the so-called time convolution (TC) and time convolutionless (TCL) equations both for a density matrix and for dynamical variables. The method is explicitly used to obtain equations in the Heisenberg picture (equations of motion for dynamical variables). In contrast to the existing derivation of equations of motion, the present formalism gives a systematic method for deriving these equations without specifying the projection operator. Moreover, the formalism is valid even for time-dependent Hamiltonian systems. A simple example is given to illustrate our formalism.

    A quantum mechanical laser model with relaxation and pumping mechanisms is solved rigorously. A basic equation for the density matrix is derived by the damping theory and is transformed into a corresponding c-number equation for a (quasi-) probability density. This is done with the aid of the quantum phase space method. The probability density is expanded in terms of orthogonal polynomials. The expansion coefficients are solved to give a continued fraction. A complete solution is obtained, namely, time evolution of the probability density is determined as well as that for certain physical quantities. The solution is valid even for strong coupling between photons and atoms: it is free from restriction on system parameters. Detailed studies on dynamics are performed for typical values of the system parameters. This is a prototype of interacting quantum nonequilibrium systems. Relevance to systems other than a laser is briefly mentioned.
