    The purposes of this research are "establishment of information acquisition/evaluation method for surface texture" and "establishment of in-situ detection method for friction/wear transition". Therefore, an image measurement system that can be easily installed on many objects was created. Using this system, laser reflected light of samples with different surface textures was acquired as a scattered light image. The characteristic values of these acquired images were evaluated by the digital image processing. As a result, it was found that the laser reflected light measurement of the surface texture is useful as a basic evaluation technique of the sample surface state assuming frictional motion.

    A new machining ststem for industrial art objects using robots has been developed. The system consists of three sub-systems : teaching robot, data processing unit and machining robot.
    In the first year, 1994, the fundamental analysis and basic experiments were done on the teaching robot, which was a redundant nine D.O.F.robot employing high resolution encorders. In the second year, 1995, a precise calibration was made to obtain high precision measurement of 3-D objects.
    In the last year, 1996, the three sub-systems were combined each other, and 3-D machining of complex shaped objects were accomplished successfully.

    BACKGROUND: Grip strength measurement is widely used in daily medical practice, and it has been reported that the grip strength decreases in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). However, conventional grip dynamometers evaluate only the maximum power of total grip strength and cannot measure the time course of grip motion. In this report, we aimed to determine the grip characteristics of CTS patients by measuring the time course of each finger's grip motion and to analyze the relationship between finger grip strength and subjective symptoms using this new grip system. METHODS: The grip strength of each finger was measured using the new grip system that has four pressure sensors on the grip parts of each finger of the Smedley grip dynamometer. We analyzed the time course of grip motion and relationship between finger grip strength and subjective symptoms in 104 volunteer and 51 CTS hands. The Japanese Society for Surgery of the Hand version of the Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Instrument (CTSI-JSSH) and the Disability of Arm, Shoulder, and Hand questionnaire (DASH) were used as subjective evaluation scores. RESULTS: In the CTS group, the grip time with the index, middle, and ring fingers was longer, and the time at which strength was lost after reaching the maximum was earlier. Patients with severe subjective symptoms tended to not use the index and middle fingers during grip motion. CONCLUSIONS: This new system that measures each finger's grip strength at one time and record the time course of grip motion could quantify a patient's symptoms easily and objectively, which may contribute to the evaluation of hand function.

    Pincer nails (PN) are defined as a transverse overcurvature of the nail plate. Although there have been advancements in therapeutic approaches, the precise underlying mechanisms for the development of PN are still not fully understood. Currently, PN are assumed to develop due to lack of upward mechanical force on the toes. We developed a novel wireless device to observe detailed gait motion. We analyzed trends of gait motion in healthy individuals without PN, healthy individuals with PN without a family history of PN, and healthy individuals with PN and a family history of PN. We found that a family history of PN is an independent risk factor for PN, irrespective of gait motion. Moreover, healthy individuals with PN but without a family history of PN exhibit strong and concentrated pressure on the first toe pad during walking. In sum, a family history of PN and excess upward mechanical forces on the first toe pad during walking may be risk factors for the development of PN.

    To assist in lifting heavy weight objects from the floor, an assistive instrument that can be worn on the hip and knee joints has been developed. The instrument was driven by coil and flat spiral springs to operate for a long time. At this instrument, the assistive mechanism for the hip joint comprised a plate cam with a "sine-output" oscillating follower and a compression coil spring. The assistive mechanism for the knee joint comprised a non-circular gear, two grooved cams and a flat spiral spring. To eliminate the influence of abduction or adduction and a medial or lateral rotation, two types of freely rotating joints were attached to each of these mechanisms. Based on the analysis of the lifting motion of an object from the floor, it was concluded that the torque applied on the hip and knee joints depends on the individual differences in body height and a body weight, and can be estimated using a two dimensional model. A prototype of the proposed instrument was fabricated and tested. This instrument can be used to reduce the required muscle activities of the hip and knee joints by about 15% compared to while lifting without the instrument when subjected to a force of 98N by an object. Furthermore, the results showed that the assistive instrument exhibits sufficient performance in aiding the lifting motions.
