The present study was conducted to investigate the awareness and support of nurses working in pediatric wards that provide breastfeeding support for mothers with infants.
Self-administered questionnaires were distributed to 91 nursing staff working in the pediatric hospital wards of three medical facilities in N Prefecture. The survey asked questions pertaining to the awareness of breastfeeding support for mothers and the actual support provided. The analysis was done by comparing ratios and qualitatively and inductively analyzing the content of answers to open-ended questions. 93.0% of nurses considered breastfeeding support necessary. Support included giving consideration to privacy during breastfeeding and the mother’s physical condition, and examining the presence or absence of breast problems and the state of lactation. Of the nurses, 72.1% experienced difficulty in interacting with mothers. -

We explored current issues to help establish expertise in reproductive nursing. Our results revealed that the specialist-training course and multi-occupational collaboration are inadequate when compared with those of foreign countries. As characteristics of reproductive medicine, it emerged that nurses strongly realize the necessity of continued learning due to rapid advances in medicine. On the other hand, it was also shown that they have a dilemma in mastering the latest knowledge while maintaining work-life balance. Therefore, it was suggested that the workplace environment should be developed. It also became clear that it is necessary to assess the amount of medical knowledge possessed by nursing personnel and to evaluate using the results of their self-improvement, in order to see the maturing of reproductive nursing expertise. Therefore, the future task is to develop a bi-directional program of support for nursing personnel and voluntary activities.

The purpose of this study was to clarify the state of breastfeeding and self-care behavior aimed at maintaining and promoting breast milk secretion in nursing mothers accompanying hospitalized infants aged < 1 year via a questionnaire survey. We also conducted semi-structured interviews with mothers who agreed to participate regarding their thoughts on breastfeeding while accompanying their hospitalized infants and their state of mind.The survey and interviews revealed that mothers experience changes in the flow of breast milk and breast condition, have concerns about breastfeeding and the environment of accompaniment, and are subject to symptoms of poor physical condition and unbalanced food intake.Our findings based on mothers' thoughts on breastfeeding and their state of mind suggest the need to provide assistance and psychological support to mothers who are breastfeeding while accompanying their hospitalized infants to reduce their stress and facilitate continued breastfeeding.

The purpose of this study was to conduct childcare consultations utilizing the Mothers’ Psychological Health Checksheet (hereafter, the checksheet) and evaluating the consultations. At the consultations, efforts were made to heighten child care happiness, and mothers were asked to participate in a questionnaire survey aimed at evaluating the consultations after the second consultation. Results were subjected to statistical analysis and qualitative inductive analysis. Changes in responses to questionnaire items after the consultations, compared to before, included a significant increase in appreciation toward the spouse and a significant decrease in mental and physical fatigue. Moreover, mothers felt satisfied with the consultations and their perceptions of self and child care. Challenges included the influence of the structure and expression of checksheet items, as well as the abilities of the consultants, on mothers.
