Takuma AKIDUKI received the Ph.D degree in electronic and information engineering from Toyohashi University of Technology, Aichi, Japan, in 2012. He was an Assistant Professor at Yamanashi Eiwa College, Yamanashi, Japan, from 2012 to 2015 and at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Toyohashi University of Technology from 2015 to 2025. Since 2025, he has been an Associate Professor with the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Yamanashi. His research interests include signal processing and physiological and behavioral sensing.

    To assist drivers in driving safely, we have proposed a measure for evaluating driver inattention based on hand activities and developed a detection algorithm for the measures. The proposed method detects the driver's hand activities as acceleration signals using inertial sensors attached to the wrists. Furthermore, we showed that the detected hand acceleration signals could be used to detect inattentive driving behaviors and their mental states, i.e., drowsiness and visual/manual/cognitive distractions in driving, by applying machine learning methods. These results show it succeeded in the studies on developing the evaluation method for driver vigilance based on hand activities and its application to driver state estimation, which was the goal of this research project.

    The algorithm based on Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT) analysis and machine learning has been developed as a method for time series analysis of nonlinear and nonstationary data, and it enables us to perform a high resolution time frequency analysis of signals with strong frequency modulation by evaluating the instantaneous variation of amplitude and frequency of data.
    By using the developed method, we analyzed gravitational waves from black hole quasi normal mode and core collapse supernova, respectively. Moreover, the noise selection and noise reduction method based on machine learning was proposed.
    We suggested that the analysis method based on the HHT and machine learning was also effective for gravitational wave analysis, and indicated the necessity of further research.

    In this research, we toward to develop a method to extract and analyze individual characteristics (individuality) such as habit and difference in skill levels, in human body movement from motion data, and apply it to skill education.To construct the extraction method of individual features, we discussed the following two major points: (1) a feature extraction technique using a trajectory attractor on a phase space, and (2) an automatic selection technique of variables constituting the phase space.
    As a result, we have shown an analysis process for clarifying what kind of movement difference occurred in which position in and between subjects from multivariate measurement data. In addition, we have confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed method by analyzing the individuality of the walking motion and the left turn motion in the car driving.

    In recent years, an automatic pouring robot has been developed in casting industry. In the small and medium-sized casting companies, the operational pouring robots are applied for realizing the high-precision pouring in high-mix low-volume production. However, it is difficult to pour precisely into the mold, because of the low realistic sensation of pouring motion on the operation site. Therefore, the operational assistance system for realizing the high-precision pouring to the operational pouring robot is developed in this study.
    In the results, the operability of the pouring robot is improved by applying the joystick with reaction force display which has same operational direction to the motion of the pouring robot. And, the positioning control system of ladle has been developed for pouring the liquid precisely into the sprue cup.

    In this study, we address a time-series analysis method for human motion analysis based on symbolization of sensor data. In our approach, the time series of the periodical signals are expressed by dynamical systems having attractors, which symbolize the time series in state space. For detecting individual characteristics in motion, we discussed differences between our approach and sliding window approach. Then, we conducted computer experiments using the simple pendulum system for investigating the relationship between the physical conditions of motion and the distribution of symbols in the symbol spaces that are designed by two approaches. Moreover, we studied the methodology of application of our approach to actual motion data for clarifying the issues of our approach. These results suggest that symbol space designed by our method can be used to discriminate individual characteristics in motion.

    <p>We examine a possibility of personal authentication using forearm surface EMG (s-EMG) during gesture operation. The s-EMG was measured 10 times from the 5 subjects during performing 6 gestures. In our previous research, we performed the gesture identification by using Support Vector Machine (SVM). As the feature values, we used the maximum and minimum values and their times of the time domain data during gesture. As the result, the identification rate was 66.7%. In this paper, to improve the identification rate, we increased the future values which we used, and we introduced the selection algorithms of the important feature values based on the random forest. As the result, the identification rate by using SVM was improved to over 80%. Moreover, the previous research claimed that the feature values in frequency domain was not effective. We found that some feature values in the frequency domain was effective for the gesture identification.</p>

    <p>We aim to develop a swimming motion coaching support system for beginner and/or intermediate swimmers by using single inertial sensor. In this paper, we develop a prototype to visualize the acquired sensor data and display the timing information of swimming motion such as respective stroke and turn. Our previous proposed estimation methods of the swimming motion are implemented in the prototype. We carry out a questionnaire survey to evaluate the visibility, effectiveness and reliability of the prototype. As the result, although there are various opinions on the estimation error of respective stroke and turn, it is suggested that the prototype system is required at the actual training scene.</p>

    It is well known that the Lifting Scheme (LS) allows us to design the fast calculation method of the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT). However, unfortunately, the LS can be only adopted for the wavelets having a compact support. For example, Meyer wavelet, which is a famous orthonormal wavelet basis, has no compact support. Additionally, the Complex Discrete Wavelet Transform (CDWT) is steady and useful for many signal processing applications, however, its imaginary part is constructed from the wavelets having no compact support. Therefore, we cannot adopt the LS for these analyses. In this study, we propose the design method of the LS filters for all the orthonormal wavelet bases without relation to having a compact support or not. We adopt our proposed method for the CDWTs using Meyer wavelet and Daubechies 6 wavelet, and confirm their steady analyses and fast calculation speeds.

    <p>We aim to develop a swimming motion coaching system for beginner and/or intermediate swimmers using a single inertial sensor. One of the requirements of the system is the process of automatically estimating and dividing the section of swimming motions (such as stroke and turn) from the sensor data. In the previous study which performed automatic estimation of the swimming motion by non ensemble learning, it was impossible to remove the different motion patterns by individuals, and the generalization ability was low. In this paper, in order to learn a common pattern in each motion and realize the motion estimation with high accuracy, we proposed an estimation method of the turn section by using random forest which is one of ensemble learning. As a result, it was suggested that the turn section could be estimated with higher accuracy than non ensemble learning method in all four swimming styles.</p>

    <p>In our previous researches, we discussed a method based on of extracting both of a similarities/style and differences/characteristic component from walking motions using four wearable motion sensors. This method suggested that data with segmented walking motion could be used to identify individuals. However, we did not discuss the physical meanings of the similarities/style and differences/characteristic components of a subject from the walking data. In this paper, we discuss a method of determining which segment data contributes to the similarities/style and differences/characteristic components, toward the understanding of the physical meanings of the similarities/style and differences/characteristic components of a subject from the walking data.</p>

    This paper presents a discrimination method of Sleep Apnea Syndrome (SAS) and early detection of potential Sleep Apnea Syndrome (Pre-SAS) using sleep breath sound, by which each subject can take the required data for the diagnosis at home only with a voice recorder. Sleep breath sound of around two hours is analyzed statistically for detecting SAS patients. Long silence sections in the sleep breath sound and the biggest sound pressure typically occurred after them are compared for distinguishing Pre-SAS, SAS patients and non-patients. The k-means method is applied for classifying the above sound data. The proposed method drastically reduces the time and effort required for SAS diagnosis compared to the current medical approaches. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed method, by which 100 % accuracy of discrimination is achieved.&lt;/p&gt;

    This study attempts to develop the ability to use ICT through the new method called BBYOD (Build and Bring Your Own). In BBYOD, new note PC was distributed to learner. As part of ICT literacy education, the learners learn the process of initial setup and management for own device. They carry the notebook PC, of which the setup was completed as &quot;personal item&quot;, and make positive use of them for learning activities. We have tried to perform the BBYOD course in Yamanashi Eiwa College. As a result, it is possible for us to provide the BBYOD course that includes the fundamental skills of an office suite, which are needed as college freshman. Moreover, the students&#039; experience of the process of initial setup in class has made a favorable impact on their motivation for learning, and brought a better understanding of the importance of network security and the file management.

    <p>We examine a possibility of personal authentication using forearm surface EMG (s-EMG) during gesture operation. The s-EMG was measured 10 times from the five subjects during performing the 6 gestures. In our previous research, we performed the gesture identiflcation by using SVM. As the feature values, we use the maximum and minimum values and their times of the time domain data during gesture. As the result, the identiflcation rate was 66.7%. In this paper, to improve the identiflcation rate, we increase the future values which we use, and we introduce the selection algorithms of the important feature values, ANOVA and random forest. As the result, the identiflcation rate is improved to over 70% with both selection algorithms. Moreover, the previous research claimed that the feature values in frequency domain was not effective. However, we found that some feature values in frequency domain was effective.</p>

    <p>In recent years, although fatal traffic accidents have been decreasing, there are still many accidents due to drowsy driving. The sleepiness detection of a driver has been using the physiological indexes. On the other hand, in the fatigue study, the sleepiness is related to the subsidiary behaviors. In this paper, we report on the result of the sleepiness detection focused on the driveŕs action characteristic.</p>

    In this study, we addresses a time-series analysis method for human motion analysis based on symbolization of sensor data. In our approach, the time series of the periodical signals are expressed by dynamical systems having attractors, which symbolize the time series in state space. This paper discuss the methodology of application of our approach to actual motion data for clarifying the issues of our approach. As a first step, we use the human walking data as an actual motion data for detecting individual characteristics in motion. The results suggest that symbol space designed by our approach can be used to discriminate individual characteristics in walking motion.

    © 2016 IEEE.The main drawback of abnormality diagnosis using the wavelet transform (WT) is that it needs much time. In order to improve this problem, a new real signal mother wavelet (RMW) that is made from all objective frequency components has been suggested. Thus the RMW can be greatly shorten the WT calculation time, and this WT is named the Wavelet Instantaneous Correlation (WIC). However, in order to construct the conventional RMW, it is essential to gather the target sounds, namely 'sound samples' beforehand. In general, these are gathered by professionals using sensors. Furthermore it is possible that the abnormality diagnosis accuracy may decrease, because of a frequency component difference between the actual sound and the 'sound sample'. In this study, therefore, we propose an improved method in which the expected characteristic frequency is extracted from actual sounds automatically, without requiring the 'sound sample' to be obtained by professionals.

    © 2016 IEEE.Bridge inspection usually is done visually on the spot. For this reason, inspection is very difficult in the case where humans can not enter, and it has become a problem. Therefore, in order to overcome this problem, we propose a new method in which pictures are taken by Drone and cracks are detected by image processing using a wavelet transform. Since bridge crack include many directional components, the characteristics of directional selection is useful for feature extraction. In this study, a 2-Dimensional Complex Discrete Wavelet Packet Transform with excellent directional selection is applied to bridge floor crack detection, and encouraging results are obtained.

    For a swimmer, to enhance his/her swimming abilities, it is desirable for swimmers and/or coaches to understand and evaluate the characteristics of own swimming motions, such as strokes and turns etc. One useful method is to use a motion capture device. However, its device requires the high cost and complicated setup. On the other hand, the wearable sensors do not require them. For these reasons, we plan to develop a system to evaluate the characteristc of the swimming motions with a single underwater wireless wearable sensor. This system gives assistant information to swimmers and/or coaches. In this paper, we discuss the framework and requirements of the system.

    We are engaged on a development of a system of swimming performance and technique evaluation with the aim of enhancing the swimming level of competitive swimmers. It evaluates performances of swimming motions (diving, strokes and turns) of a swimmer by using an underwater wireless wearable sensor attached on swimmer's waist. This system gives feedback to a swimmer/coach at the timings: (A) real-time, (B) end of swimming and (C) after training. To make these feedbacks by analyzing measured acceleration data, it requires an automatic swimming style classification. For the feedback at the timing (A), it has to classify the swimming style at each one stroke from corresponding part of data, and for (B) it has to classify from whole data. We examined the availability of the method of constructing a decision tree by dividing a feature space which feature quantities of each stroke are distributed in. After constructing the decision tree from training data and confirming the reliability of it, we assessed the availability of our method by F-measures of the result from test data. In our experiment, the styles freestyle and backstroke were well classified with high F-measure (greater than 0.95), but the styles breaststroke and butterfly were not well classified with not so high F-measures (greater than 0.72). This result means the evaluation for the feedback at (A) is still difficult to realize. However, it also means that this method is enough available for the feedback at (B) because the classification a this timing decides on a majority vote.

    The use of technical refinement is playing an important role in the process of optimizing training efficiency and improving results of athletes. Therefore, we aim to develop an online monitoring and feedback tool to follow the swimming training using a single waterproofed and wireless motion sensor attached on the swimmers center of body (back). In this paper, as the first step, we investigated the feature quantities to discriminate four swimming styles using the data of a single three-axis accelerometer. We found that there was a possibility that the combination of simple feature quantities could be used to discriminate four swimming styles.

    © 2015 IEEE.Currently, it is said that potential sufferers of Sleep Apnea Syndrome (SAS) account for up up to about 2% of the population in Japan. Not only does SAS cause lack of concentration during the day, it may also cause complications such as hypertension and heart failure, and it has been called a modern disease. However, there is a problem that it is impossible to decide if one suffers from it And diagnosis is difficult if a patient does not go to hospital, because diagnosis requires many resources. Therefore, we propose a method that can easily diagnose SAS by the continuous wavelet transform (CWT) using a vocal sound signal, and obtain encouraging results.

    This paper discusses the problem of human motion analysis from inertial sensor (accelerometer and gyroscope) data, which is the time sequence data obtained from human motion. The inertial sensors are widely used in the wearable sensing field for understanding human activities. Human motion can be divided into simple movements, such as swinging the arms or legs. These simple movements are fundamentally periodic, and they can be modeled with dynamical systems having periodic attractors. On the other hand, more complex motion like walking can be represented as a sequence of simple movements. To address the problem of analyzing human motion data, we propose a new framework based on a dynamical system. The human motions observed by the inertial sensors are divided into simple movements, and they can be often described as periodical signals. The periodical signals are described by a dynamical system, which can store the periodical or transitional trajectory in a state space by using basin of attraction. The attractors abstract a kind of proto-symbol. The dynamical system having periodical attractors is shown to characterize human motion effectively by exploiting spatiotemporal continuity, because it describes the flow of its transitions into the state space. Moreover, in the designed symbol space from the attractors, the information of human motion dynamics is described in the placement of the points. Thus, each point or transition between points in the symbol space corresponds to a specific type of motion; it can act as a notation method of motion characteristics. © 2011 IFAC.

    It has been reported in the literature that Cellular Neural Networks (CNN) are effective as associative memories and they have been applied to many kinds of pattern recognition tasks. Flexibility of their design can be increased by expanding the output function from being 2-valued to being multi-valued. As a design method for associative memories, SVD(singular value decomposition) is popular, but a design procedure which uses LMI(linear matrix inequality) was proposed and obtained excellent results. In this paper, we propose a new design method expanded from the 2-valued output CNN to a multi-valued output CNN by using the LMI method and confirm the effectiveness of it. © 2009 IEEE.

    This paper discusses the design of multi-valued output functions of Cellular Neural Networks (CNNs) implementing associative memories. The output function of the CNNs is a piecewise linear function which consists of a saturation and non-saturation range. The new structure of the output function is defined, and is called the "basic wave-form". The saturation ranges with n levels are generated by adding n - 1 basic waveforms. Consequently, creating an associative memory of multi-valued patterns has been successful, and computer experiment results show the validity of the proposed method. The results of this research can expand the range of applications of CNNs as associative memories. © 2006 ICASE.
