    We proposed and demonstrated a simple but deterministic scheme for generating polarization-entangled photon pairs at telecommunication wavelengths with type-II quasi-phase-matched spontaneous parametric down-conversion (QPM-SPDC) having two poling periods. We fabricated a LiNbO3 crystal having two poling periods so as to generate entangled photons at two wavelengths, i.e., 1506 nm and 1594 nm. We characterized the two-photon polarization state with state tomography and confirmed that the state was highly entangled. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

    We have investigated the characteristics of the intense terahertz (THz) electromagnetic radiation in (GaAs)(35)/(AlAs)(35) multiple quantum wells with an optical gating method, where the radiation source is coherent longitudinal optical (LO) phonons confined in the GaAs layers. It is found that the intensity of the THz wave from the coherent GaAs-like LO phonon is enhanced under the condition that the pump-pulse energy is resonant with the energies of the confined heavy-hole and light-hole excitons, which suggests the considerable contribution of the Frohlich interaction to the generation mechanism. The period-number dependence of the THz-wave intensity demonstrates that the THz wave generated in each GaAs layer is constructively superimposed. Moreover, the temperature dependence of the THz-wave intensity is discussed from an aspect of disturbance by thermal phonons. (c) 2007 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.

    We experimentally evaluated a cadmium-telluride (CdTe) crystal as the nonlinear crystal for generation and detection of terahertz (THz) radiation by using a femtosecond-pulse laser. Numerical simulations based on the nonlinear Maxwell equations, including third-order optical dispersion within the spectral width of an optical pulse and absorption in the THz frequency region, well reproduce both the amplitude and phase spectra of the emitted THz wave. Excitation wavelength dependences of the THz radiation from the CdTe crystal indicate that the phase-matched condition is satisfied at a wavelength of 1000 nm. We also experimentally demonstrated a THz generation and detection system using a 1045 nm Yb-doped ultrashort-pulse fiber laser, and we verified that CdTe is one of the most suitable nonlinear crystals for a Yb-doped fiber laser. © 2007 Optical Society of America.

    Exciton characteristics of GaTe single crystals grown by vapour-phase transport have been studied by optical measurements. Up to n = 4, hydrogen-like exciton series are clearly observed in the absorption spectra. In the n = 1 exciton energy region three types of excitons exist. From the group theoretical consideration and studies of micro-photoluminescence and micro-Raman scattering spectra, we have concluded that a suitable scheme for the excitons in GaTe is not LS coupling but j-j coupling.
