    Precise control of the interface in a solid-state heterojunction Z-scheme photocatalyst is important for achieving the intended photocatalytic activity. In this study, we have designed a photocatalyst with a hierarchical structure by photodepositing gold nanoparticles on the surface of bismuth vanadate and then loading zinc rhodium oxide on the gold surface. Owing to the controlled hierarchical structure, photoexcited electrons generated in bismuth vanadate smoothly transferred to zinc rhodium oxide through the gold nanoparticles. Utilizing the thus-constructed Z-scheme photocatalyst, the simultaneous evolution of hydrogen and oxygen from water at a molar ratio of 2:1 was achieved under irradiation with visible light.

    エネルギー変換反応において多電子移動反応は重要な役割を果たすことが知られているが、一方でその反応機構に対する理解の不足が高活性な触媒の開発を妨げている。そこで本研究では電気化学測定と分光測定を同時に測定することにより多電子移動反応の反応機構の検討を行った。具体的にはシリコンプリズムや金の表面を多電子移動触媒で被覆した電極材料を作成し、反応駆動下の電極触媒に全反射型赤外吸収分光や表面増強ラマン散乱分光などの振動分光を適用する測定手法を開発し、測定を行った。その結果、酸化マンガン表面では酸素発生条件下において水分子の水素結合状態が変化し、水素結合のネットワークを持たない孤立した水分子の割合が増加することを見出した。酸素発生反応生化学的な見地からも注目の高い反応であり、水分子のプロトンネットワークの反応への関与を示す同結果は自然界との比較からも示す興味深い知見であると考えている。また、同触媒上でメタノール酸化を行った場合には塩基性条件下においてのみ触媒表面へのメタノールの吸着が強く生じ、同時に酸化のための過電圧が大幅に減少することを明らかにした。この結果は今後酸性などの他条件下での活性向上に向けて材料設計の指針を与えるものと考えている。電気化学と振動分光を組み合わせた同様な研究は以前から報告されているが、それらのほとんどは単結晶金属の表面を利用したものに限られていた。それに対して、本研究で開発した手法は金属酸化物など多様な触媒に適用可能である。したがって、今後元素戦略上重要な種々の多電子移動触媒の反応機構を解明する上で有用な手法となると考えられる。

    In this paper, efficient and stable photoelectrochemical (PEC) hydrogen (H2) evolution using copper indium sulfide (CuInS2) thin film electrodes was studied. Modification with a cadmium sulfide (CdS) layer led to improved charge separation at the interface between CuInS2 and CdS; however, the photocorrosive nature of CdS induced poor stability of the photocathode. Further surface coating with an electrodeposited Pt layer over the CdS-covered CuInS2 photocathode prevented the CdS layer from making contact with the electrolyte solution, and enabled efficient PEC H2 evolution without appreciable degradation. This indicates that the Pt layer functioned not only as a reaction site for H2 evolution, but also as a protection layer. In addition, it was found that surface protection using a noble metal layer was also effective for stable PEC carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction when appropriate noble metal cocatalysts were selected. When Au or Ag was used, carbon monoxide was obtained as a product of PEC CO2 reduction.

    Precise control of the interface in a solid-state heterojunction Z-scheme photocatalyst is important for achieving the intended photocatalytic activity. Herein, we have designed a photocatalyst with a hierarchical structure by photodepositing gold (Au) on the (040) facet of decahedral bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) and then loading zinc rhodium oxide (ZnRh2O4) on the Au surface. Owing to the facet-dependent charge separation property of the decahedral BiVO4, photoexcited electrons in BiVO4 accumulate at the (040) facet and then transfer to Au, which acts as a solid electron mediator, to combine with holes of ZnRh2O4. Utilizing the thus-constructed Z-scheme photocatalyst (ZnRh2O4/Au/BiVO4), the simultaneous liberation of hydrogen (H-2) and oxygen (O-2) from water at a molar ratio of 2 : 1 was achieved under irradiation with visible light up to a wavelength of 540 nm, whereas neither H-2 nor O-2 was produced when Au was deposited randomly on the BiVO4 surface. This study provides insight into the rational design of a solid-state Z-scheme photocatalyst using facet-controlled nanoparticles to enhance photocatalytic activity.

    To construct photoresponsive unidirectional charge transfer units for the activation of oxygen-evolving manganese oxide (MnOx) catalyst, metal-oxide nanoclusters consisting of cerium (CeIII) or cobalt (CoII) ions and Keggin-type polyoxotungstate (PW12O40 3-) were synthesized in a polymer matrix as visible-light-absorbing chromophores. The utilization of the polymer matrix enabled the molecularly dispersed PW12O40 3- states and was advantageous to achieve product-separable energy conversion systems. The reaction of PW12O40 3- with Ce(NO3)3 or CoCl2 in the polymer matrix generated the new broad absorption tails extending from the UV to visible region, assignable to metal-to-metal charge transfer (MMCT) transitions of oxo-bridged binuclear WVI-O-CeIII and WVI-O-CoII units. Cyclic voltammetry analysis of the oxo-bridged binuclear units in the polymer membrane revealed that the CoIII/CoII couple had a 300 mV more positive redox potential than that of CeIV/CeIII and was capable of extracting electrons from MnOx catalyst. Although visible-light irradiation of the polymer membrane having WVI-O-CoII units resulted in negligible photocurrent generation, a clear anodic photocurrent response assigned to photoinduced WVI-O-CoII âWV-O-CoIII transition was observed after the coupling of MnOx catalysts to WVI-O-CoII units. This finding demonstrated that the generation of anodic photocurrent is derived from the activation of MnOx catalyst by the photogenerated CoIII through confined WVI-O-CoII linkages. The system in this work based on POM and polymer, and its synthetic method provide us a novel methodology to develop artificial photosynthetic systems with spatially and energetically optimized components.

    The oxygen evolution reaction (OER; 2H(2)O -> O-2 + 4H(+) + 4e(-)) is being intensively studied to generate fossil fuel-independent energy carriers. As 4d/5d rare metal catalysts, such as amorphous iridium oxide (IrOx), display higher activity than 3d metal catalysts, elucidating the critical mechanistic differences between these materials is important for the synthesis of cost-effective OER catalysts. Although most studies of OER catalysts have focused on O-O bond formation energetics, here, we examined the OER mechanism of IrOx based on charge accumulation, which was recently shown to determine the OER activity for Mn and Fe oxides. Kinetic analysis using Tafel and trumpet plots, along with the difference in the pH dependence between the OER onset potential and that of iridium valence change, showed that the valence change of iridium is more favorable than formation. In-situ evanescent wave spectroscopy revealed that an intermediate assignable to Ir5+ with oxygen ligands in opposite spin serves as the precursor of OER regardless of pH. As the generation of this species is not related to valence changes of iridium, these results confirm that charge accumulation is not rate-limiting for OER on IrOx, which is a key mechanistic difference between IrOx and less-efficient 3d metal electrocatalysts.
