    In order to simulate the electrochemical reactions taking place on fuel cell catalysts, Pt(111), Pt(10 10 9), and Pt(20 19 19) surfaces were prepared, and the electroocidation reaction of carbon monoxide in perchloric acid solution was investigated by electrochemical measurements and scanning turnneling microscopy (STM). Stakes of single crystal electrodes ware prepared by annealing in a hydrogen flame and quenched in a pure water.
    On both Pt(111) and stepped surfaces, electrooxidation of carbon monoxide started at ca. 0.4 vs RHE, but the onset electrode potential shifted in the anodic direction as the potential was warmed between 0.05 and 12 V After the 30 cycles, the onset potential for the electrooxidation of carbon monoxide became ca. 0.7 V on all the surfaces By STM, it was revealed that the steps were initially smooth and round, but as the potential scan continues, the steps became mom straight-like Small atomic-high islands of Pt was also bind by STM. It was suggested that after the cycling, atomic defects, such as kinks and adatoms, were diffused on the surface and trapped by other defects to make less-defected Pt surface.
    When the surface was treated with IR heating method, steps were more orderly arranged, but the electrooxidation activity was not lowered, showing the existence of atomic defects on the surface.
    The investigation open up the new insight into the electrooxidation of carbon monoxide.

    One basis of the nanotechnology is fabricating surfaces at namometer level. For this process, the self-organization of atoms and molecules is considered as a promising phenomenon. In order to understand the self-organizing processes contributing to nanotechnology at nanometer processes at solid and solid/liquid interfaces, we carried out investigation on four field : 1) Metal surfaces, 2) Specific adsorbed ions, 3) Organic molecules, and 4) Compound semiconductor thin films. For all the topics listed above, the atomic/molecular processes were elucidated.
    To be more concrete, following topics were made clear: 1) Nanostructuring at Pt surface, 2) Self-organization of specific adsorbed ions, 3) Self-organization of organic molecules, and 4) Fabrication of thin films of compound semiconductors by anordic oxidation.

  • Formation of Surfaces and Interfaces Designed at Atomic/Molecular Level

    Understanding the phenomena that occur on electrode surfaces such as deposition of metals and adsorption of organic molecules is essential to the industrial applications including the development of devices. We obtained the following results in the fiscal year 2001. 1) Underpotential deposition (UPD) and bulk deposition of Cu onto Pd(111) in solution : during the UPD that occurred in one step and the bulk deposition, sulfate ions always existed on Pd and Cu surfaces. 2) Adlayer structures of anthracene on Ag single-crystal surfaces in solution : anthracene were adsorbed on Ag(111), Ag(100), Ag(110) surfaces, and the adlayer structures were assigned as (2【square root】3 x 2【square root】3)R30°, c(4 x 6), and c(4 x 4), respectively. 3) Adlayers of CN on Ir(111) in alkaline solution : the adlayer structure of CN forming a (2【square root】3 x 2【square root】3)R30° structure were found to consist of units of 6-membered rings of CN, and the complexation of Na^+ took place in the rings. 4) Adlayers of coronene on Au(111) surface in solution : the adlayer of coronene was formed in benzene solution by immersing a Au(111) substrate, on which a highly ordered adlayer of coronene was formed in a (4 x 4) symmetry. 5) Adlayer structure of Br on Ag(100) surface and the formation of AgBr on Ag(100) : Br on Ag(100) formed a c(2 x 2) lattice, on which AgBr layers were epitaxially grown. 6) Formation processes of a p-xylene adlayer on Rh(111) surface in UHV : the adlayer of p-xylene grew gradually on Rh(111) surface to form a c(4 x 2【square root】3)rect structure, which was previously found to be formed in solution.
    As described above, we successfully modified metal surfaces and interfaces with an atomic level both in liquid and in vacuum environments, optimizing parameters such as an electrode potential and a vapor pressure.

  • Structural Analysis of Solid/Liquid Interfaces by Using UHV-EC STM Combining Systems

    In 1995, we constructed and improved our instruments for the analysis of solid/liquid interfaces. The analyical systems are for 1) easily comparing the results obtained by in-situ electrochemical STM and ex-situ UHV-EC combining system and for 2) in-situ electrochemical STM measurements on the single crystal samples prepared and defined under UHV.In 1996, by using these instruments, We carried out the following investigations. 1) Structural analysis of the adsorption structures of iodine on Pt(111), Au(111), and Ag(111) in electrolyte solutions. On Pt(111), iodine formes (3x3) or (ROO<7>xROO<7>)R19.1゜ structure according to the immersion potentials. On Au(111) and Ag(111), iodine exibites continuous structural change according to the applied electrode potentials in solutions. 2) Electrochemical etching of Pd(111), (100), and (110) electrode surfaces were examined. The etching process in an atomic scale was understood by the combining system. 3) Ni(100) and (111) surfaces were prepared under UHV,and they were subsequently brought into solutions for in-situ STM measurements without polution. Ni surfaces showed (100) and (111) structures in solutions. The etching processes were also examined.

  • STMを用いた単結晶清浄表面における電解水素化反応の解析

    本年度に得られた研究実績の概要を以下に示す。
    I.白金単結晶上での酸素還元 0.05M H_2SO_4+5mM CuSO_4溶液中でPt(111)面上に銅原子をUPDすると第1UPDピーク後に銅の(√<3>×√<3>)R30°構造が形成され、酸素還元は2電子反応で進行する事が知られている。一方、1mM HCl+0.05M H_2SO_4+5mM CuSO_4溶液中でのPt(111)面の酸素還元反応を検討した結果、反応は1波目の銅UPDピークを過ぎた電位でほぼ完全にブロックされた。1mM KBrを含む溶液の場合もUPDピーク後に酸素還元反応はほぼ完全にブロックされることが見出された。いずれの場合もハロゲンイオンの共存によって、UPDした銅原子が(1×1)構造を形成するために、酸素還元が阻害されたと考えられる。Pt(100)及びPt(110)面で同様の検討を行った結果、清浄面では酸素が4電子還元されたが、銅をUPDすると酸素還元はブロックされた。これは第1UPDが終了した時点で銅原子きUPDによって酸素分子の吸着サイトが完全に失われるためであると考えられる。
    II.ヨウ素修飾Au(111)面に吸着したTMPyP分子の構造解析 0.1M HClO_4+5×10^<-7>MTMPyP溶液中で、ヨウ素原子の吸着したAu(111)電極に吸着したTMPyP分子の構造をSTM測定した結果、規則正しい周期構造を得ることに成功した。吸着構造の詳細な解析の結果、吸着したTMPyP分子の列は一列おきに45°回転することによって、ほぼ最密充填している事が明らかにされた。このようなTMPyP分子の、周期的な配列構造の自己組織化は未修飾のAu(111)表面では観察されず、乱雑に吸着した構造のみが見出された。Au(111)表面がヨウ素原子で被覆されることによって、基板-TMPyP分子間の相互作用が弱まり、その結果、TMPyPが吸着する過程で表面を移動し、TMPyP分子間の相互作用に基づく自己組織化が進行すると考えられる。

  • 放射光X線回折による電解質溶液中の金属および半導体電極表面の構造決定

    I.固液界面X線回折実験装置の作製
    試料を取りつけるセル本体は、テフロンで作製し、側面から電解質溶媒を自由に注入・排出できるように設計した。試料表面は不活性高分子フィルムで覆い、表面とフィルムの間は数μm程度の溶液層のみが存在するように配置した。全体をゴニオメーター上に取りつけ、X線照射および検出角度が自由に設定できることとした。
    II.金属電極表面の構造解析
    金属試料としてAu(111)およびヨウ素で被覆したPt(111)電極表面を用いた。どちらの試料共に(1×1)構造に起因するピークが観察された。特にPt(111)電極についてはヨウ素に起因する(3×3)構造も観察された。ヨウ素被覆したPt(111)電極を電気化学的に酸化したところ、酸化につれて(1×1)に起因するピーク強度は単調に減少した。
    III.Si(111)(1×1)-H電極表面の酸化過程
    水溶液中、水素で終端されたSi(111)表面のX線回折実験を行い。表面の(1×1)回折ピークが初めて測定された。酸化につれこのピーク強度は減少したが、しばらくするといったん増加し、再び減少した。これは、Si/SiO_2界面の構造変化に対応すると考察された。

    To accelerate the spread use of polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs), it is essential to increase power density and durability, while reduce costs. We have succeeded in developing an innovative gas diffusion layer (GDL) with gas flow channels (GDLFC(+)) fabricated on a flat separator that enabled both cost reduction and high performance. In this study, neutron radiography was used to observe the distribution of liquid water during power generation (1-3 A cm(-2)) of a cell with a size (1.0 cm (W) x 9.7 cm (L)) large enough to evaluate the actual cell. With using our GDLs and interdigitated (comb-shaped) gas flow channels, the distributions of liquid water were quantitatively imaged, influenced by the current density, the relative humidity, the oxygen utilization, and the water repellency of the GDL. The increase in linear velocity of the oxidant gases effectively suppressed the retention of liquid water at the cathode. Even at high oxygen utilization (67%) under continuous power generation for 30 min, the water-repellent GDL effectively made possible the back-diffusion of water over the entire electrode area, contributing not only to a large reduction in diffusion overvoltage but also in Ohmic overvoltage, resulting in high current density and high stability of a PEFC.

    For higher performances of anion exchange membrane (AEM) fuel cells, understanding the phase separated structures inside AEMs is essential, as well as those at the catalyst layer/membrane interfaces. The AEMs based on quaternized aromatic semi-block copolymers with different ion exchange capacities (IECs) were systematically investigated. With IECs of 1.23 and 1.95 mequiv g(-1), the water uptakes at room temperature were 37% and 98%, and the anion conductivities 23.6 and 71.4 mS cm(-1), respectively. The increases were not proportional to the IEC. Images obtained by transmission electron microscopy in vacuum were similar with both IEC values, but the development of a clear phase separation in humidified nitrogen was observed in the profiles only with 1.95 mequiv g(-1) obtained by small angle X-ray scattering. At the temperature of 40 degrees C and the relative humidity (RH) of 30%, the average currents observed at the tip apex by current-sensing atomic force microscopy were <0.5 and 10 pA with 1.23 and 1.95 mequiv g(-1), respectively, and those at 70% RH were 10 and 15 pA, respectively. The humidity gave a larger influence on the bulk structure with 1.95 mequiv g(-1), whereas a larger influence on the surface conductivity with 1.23 mequiv g-1. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V.     By the use of in situ scanning tunneling microscopy and surface X-ray scattering techniques, we have clarified the surface structure and the layer-by-layer compositions of a Pt skin/Pt3Co(111) single-crystal electrode, which exhibited extremely high activity for the oxygen reduction reaction. The topmost layer was found to be an atomically flat Pt skin with (1 x 1) structure. Cobalt was enriched in the second layer up to 98 atom %, whereas the Co content in the third and fourth layers was slightly smaller than that in the bulk. By X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the Co in the subsurface layers was found to be positively charged, which is consistent with an electronic modification of the Pt skin. The extremely high activity at the Pt skin/Pt3Co(111) single crystal is correlated with this specific surface structure.

    In situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy has afforded detailed structural and electronic characterization of a newly developed stabilized Pt-skin/PtCo alloy nanoparticle catalyst for CO-tolerant H-2 oxidation. The X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) results show the significant effects of H and CO adsorption on white lines for pure Pt nanoparticles, which are correlated with the depletion of the density of states (DOS) just below the Fermi level (FL) calculated with density-functional theory (DFT). In contrast, for the Pt-skin/PtCo surface, there is little effect on the XANES for either H or CO adsorption. The lack of effect is consistent with the lack of variation of the DOS near the FL. The extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) results for pure Pt nanoparticles have exhibited significant changes caused by H and CO adsorption. Such changes are suggested to be associated with the selected surface expansion of Pt atoms, as revealed from DFT-calculated radial distribution functions (RDFs). In contrast, for the Pt-skin/PtCo surface, there were negligible changes in the EXAFS, either with H or CO adsorption, which is consistent with the lack of changes in the DFT-calculated RDF. Notably, the rigidity of the Pt skin and the lower degree of overlap between Pt and CO orbitals, due to the narrowing of the d-band, are thought to be responsible for the weak adsorption.

    We report synthesis and properties of a novel series of ammonium-functionalized perfluoroalkylene/aromatic copolymers. In particular, the effect of number and position of ammonium groups on the properties of the copolymer thin membranes was investigated. Fluorenylidene biphenylene groups were used as a scaffold for the ammonium groups. By controlling the chloromethylation reaction conditions, the ammonium groups could be introduced up to 4.0 per fluorenylidene biphenylene unit, resulting in the ion exchange capacity (IEC) of the resulting copolymers ranging from 1.0 to 1.8 meq g(-1). The copolymers provided bendable and transparent membranes by solution casting. The membranes exhibited phase-separated morphology based on the hydrophilic/hydrophobic differences in the copolymer components. A copolymer membrane with IEC = 1.0 meq g(-1) showed high hydroxide ion conductivity (ca. 70mS cm(-1)) at 80 degrees C in water and good alkaline stability in 1M KOH aq. over 1000 h at 60 degrees C. The membrane showed only minor degradation after the long-term alkaline stability test.

    Anion conductivity at the surfaces of two anion-exchange membranes (AEMs), quaternized ammonium poly(arylene ether) multiblock copolymer(QPE-bl-3) and quaternized ammonium poly(arylene perfluoro-alkylene) copolymer (QPAF-1), synthesized by our group was investigated using current-sensing atomic force microscopy under purified air at various relative humidities. The anion-conducting spots were distributed inhomogeneously on the surface Of QPE-bl-3, and the total areas of the anion-conducting spots and the current at each spot increased with humidity. The anion-conductive areas on QPAF-1 were found on the entire surface even at a low humidity. Distribution of the anion-conducting spots on the membrane was found to directly affect the performance of an AEM fuel cell.

    Visualization of the oxygen partial pressure (p(O(2))) was performed at the surface of a gas diffusion layer (GDL) and the upper part of the gas-flow channel of the cathode of an operating polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) with straight flow channels by using an oxygen-sensitive luminescent dye film. The gradient of p(O(2)) inside a channel was clearly observed, even on the GDL surface across the channel. A numerical simulation was performed to understand the reaction distributions inside the PEFC. By visualization and numerical simulation, the distributions of p(O(2)), the current density, water concentration, and temperature in the operating PEFC were obtained, and the relationships between the parameters were studied.
