    In this study, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/poly(4-styrenesulfonic acid) (PEDOT/PSS) aqueous dispersions were newly synthesized at different polymerization temperatures. Moreover, the PEDOT/PSS/PG films were fabricated by adding polyglycerol (PG) to the PEDOT/PSS aqueous dispersion. It was found that the PEDOT/PSS/PG spin coated on polyurethane film was stretchable up to 170% and the electrical conductivity reached up to 411 S/cm. By spraying PEDOT/PSS/PG electrodes on both sides of ionic liquid/polyurethane gel, we succeeded in fabricating a microactuator that operates at a frequency of 100 Hz.

    The soft and highly conductive PEDOT/PSS films were fabricated by addition of xylitol (Xyl). The IL/PU/PEDOT/PSS/Xyl soft actuators were fabricated by sandwiching a transparent ionic liquid/polyurethane (IL/PU) gel between two flexible PEDOT/PSS/Xyl electrodes. Upon application of an electric field, the actuator showed quick and intensive bending toward anode due to the movement of ionic liquid in the gel. It was found that the soft actuator operated at frequencies higher than 50 Hz, which was associated with the soft and flexible IL/PU gel and PEDOT/PSS/Xyl electrodes with high ionic and electric conductivities, respectively.

    Free-standing films made of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) doped with poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT/PSS) with various PSS composition ratios were prepared by casting water dispersion of the PEDOT/PSS colloidal particles in the presence of an extra PSS. The maximum contraction of the film by application of an electric field increased with increasing both PSS composition ratio and relative humidity (RH), where the value attained 7% for the film with 93% of PSS at 70 %RH. Since the isothermal sorption curve of the film was less dependent on the PSS content, the significant increase of the film contraction was explained by two mechanisms: (i) the extra PSS prevented from hydrogen bonding between the adjacent PEDOT/PSS particles that suppressed dimensional changes of the film; (ii) the higher the RH, the larger the water content sorbed in the film.

    ポリピロールフィルム(長さ35mm,幅5mm)に直流電圧を繰り返し印加したときの伸縮挙動を調べた。フィルムの伸縮はてこの原理を応用した装置を用い,ビーム末端の位置変化をレーザー変位計で測定している。2Vを30秒電圧印加することによりフィルムは約0.9%(0.32mm)収縮し,これが可逆的に起こることがわかった。伸縮率は溶液中でのドープ・脱ドープによる値と同程度であるが,フィルムの伸縮は空気中で起こり,電解液や対電極,レドックスガスは不要である。さらに長時間電圧印加したときのフィルムの伸縮挙動.電流値,表面温度およびフィルム近傍の湿度変化を調べたところ,フィルムの収縮率は数分でほぼ一定(1.2%)になった。このときの電流値は50mAであり,フィルム表面温度は25℃から32℃に上昇する。興味深いことに,電圧印加によりフィルム近傍の相対湿度が急激に上昇することがわかった。これはフィルムに吸着している水分子が電圧印加によって吐き出されたことを意味している。一方,電圧を切つた直後に相対湿度が急激に減少するのは,周囲の空気中から水蒸気がフィルムに再吸着するためと考えられる。長時間の電圧印加により相対湿度が低下するのは,フィルム近傍の温度が上昇したためである。実際,電場下における絶対湿度は時間とともに元の値まで回復する。ここで,電圧印加による湿度変化とフィルムの伸縮挙動がよく一致していることから,フィルムの収縮が水蒸気の脱着に基づくことがわかる。このように.ポリピロールフィルムは電圧のオン・オフに応答してあたかも呼吸をするかのように,水蒸気を吐いたり吸ったりして伸縮するというユニークな性質をもつことが明らかになった。これに対し,真空中において電圧印加によりフィルムが逆に伸びるのは,高分子鎖の熱膨張によるものと考えられる。これらの結果から,空気中におけるフィルムの電気収縮メカニズムは次のように考えられる。まず始めに,フィルムを空気中に放置すると吸湿により体積は膨張する。電圧印加によるジュール加熱によりフィルムはわずかに熱膨張するが,高分子鎖上に吸着している水分子が熱を吸収し脱着するためにフィルムは収縮する。ここで,印加電圧が低い場合は脱水による収縮が支配的であるが,印加電圧の増加とともに熱膨張の寄与が大きくなる。その他にも,電圧印加によるポリピロール鎖の構造変化や水分子との相互作用変化なども考えられる。

    モノマーとしてピロール,ドーパントとしてテトラフルオロホウ酸を用い,電解重合によりフィルムを作製した・フィルムの延伸は,ゾーンヒーターをクロスヘッドに取り付けた引張試験機を用いて行った。100-250℃のヒーター温度でゾーン延伸を行ったところ,フィルムの延伸において印加張力(σ)にしきい値が存在し,それ以上で延伸倍率は張力に比例して増加した。これはポリピロール鎖の剛直性と高いガラス転移温度によるものと考えられる。延伸温度(Td)の上昇とともにしきい値は低下し,Td=150℃および200℃で約1.4倍まで延伸可能であった。延伸方向における電導度は延伸倍率とともにほぼ直線的に増加し,Td=150℃,σ=40MPaでゾーン延伸したフィルム(延伸倍率1.4)で最高327S/cmに達し,未延伸フィルム(145S/cm)に比べ2倍以上であった。また,ヤング率および切断強度も3.7GPa,149MPaに増加した。これらの結果は,ゾーン延伸によるポリピロール鎖の分子配向に起因すると考えられる。フィルム(長さ35mm,幅1mm)の変形挙動はレーザー変位計および画像センサを用いて測定した。相対湿度の上昇とともに未延伸フィルムは等方的に膨張した。次に,相対湿度50%の条件下でポテンショスタットより3Vの直流電圧を印加したところ,フィルムは電場方向に1.3%収縮しこれが可逆的に起こることがわかった。電流値は27mAであり,フィルム表面温度は8℃上昇した。フィルム近傍の相対湿度は電圧印加により急激に増加し,また電圧を切ると低下することから,フィルムがあたかも呼吸をするかのように電圧のオン・オフに応答して水蒸気を吸脱着しながら伸縮することがわかった。ここで,電場に垂直方向におけるフィルムの収縮率が3.1%(水平方向の2倍以上)に達することから,ポリピロール未延伸フィルムは等方的な構造であるにもかかわらず異方的な電気収縮挙動を示すことが明らかになった。これは,フィルムの電気収縮が単なるジュール加熱による等方的な脱水では説明できないことを意味している。一方,ゾーン延伸フィルム(Td=150℃,σ=40MPa,延伸倍率1.4)の延伸方向に3Vの直流電圧を印加したところ,未延伸フィルムに比べ高い電流値を示したが電場方向にはほとんど収縮せず,垂直方向に約1.5%収縮した。これは,ポリピロール鎖の配向によるフィルムの構造異方性を反映していると考えられる。

    平成11年度において本研究では,ガス吸着測定システム(チノー, IR-AM110)を用い,ポリピロールフィルム/水相互作用の熱力学的・速度論的解析を行った。吸着曲線は相対湿度の低い領域でラングミュア型,高い領域ではヘンリー型の二元収着モデルで表されることがわかった。一般にラングミュア型吸着は,高分子中に存在するボイドや空孔などの結合サイトヘの吸着と考えられ,PPy/DBS<PPy/TsO<PPy/ClO_4<PPy/BF_4の順で結合サイト数が増加することがわかった。また,ヘンリー型吸着は高分子マトリックス中への気体分子の溶解機構で表され,高湿度領域における直線の勾配より算出したヘンリー定数は,ドーパントの種類によらず一定であった。また,クラスター関数から算出したクラスターサイズから,90%の高い相対湿度においてもポリピロールフィルム中の水分子は凝集することなく,比較的孤立した状態で存在することが明らかになった。DSC測定において水の融解ピークが観察されなかったことから,フィルム中の吸着水は全て不凍水として存在すると考えられる。不凍水の数はピロールユニット当たり0.7〜1.6であり,ポリ(L-グルタミン酸)の20に比べて少ない。これは,共役二重結合によリポリピロール鎖上の電荷が非局在化していることに起因すると考えられる。速度論的解析から,水分子のポリピロールフィルムヘの拡散がフィックの法則に従うことが明らかになった。拡散係数はPPy/BF_4で最も大きく,2.43×10^<-8>cm^2/sであった。ドーパントの種類により拡散係数が大きく異なるのは,電解重合過程で形成される高次構造の違いによるものと考えられる。密度測定の結果より,フィルムの嵩密度は浮沈法から求めた値に比べて小さく,その差はPPy/BF_4でより顕著であった。これはフィルム中にボイドや空孔が多数存在するためであり,等温吸着曲線の結果と一致する。得られた実験結果より,フィルムの高速変形挙動は多孔性フィルムヘの水分子の素早い吸着・拡散によるポリピロール鎖のコンホメーション変化に基づくことが明らかになった。

    Flexible and transparent piezoelectric films were fabricated by bar-coating of conductive inks consisting of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) doped with poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) water dispersion and ethylene glycol on piezoelectric poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF) films. The water contact angle of the PVDF film decreased from 74 to 34 by plasma ion bombardment at a discharge current of 30 mA for 1 min, which significantly improved adhesion of the PEDOT:PSS on the PVDF film. The electrical and optical properties of the PEDOT:PSS/PVDF films were strongly dependent of the composition of the conductive ink: The sheet resistance (R-s), thickness (d), electrical conductivity (sigma), total light transmittance (TT), and haze at 90 wt% of PEDOT:PSS water dispersion were 109 Omega/square, 155 nm, 590 S/cm, 84%, and 3.0%, respectively, where the figure-of merit (FOM) as transparent electrodes was found to be 27. The acoustic transfer properties of the flexible and transparent PEDOT:PSS/PVDF film speakers showed that the maximum sound pressure level (SPL) attained was as high as 70 dB at 90 wt% of the PEDOT:PSS dispersion, while the Rs of the PEDOT:PSS electrodes was crucially important for the performance of the film speaker.

    The pH effect on the carrier transport of conducting polymer PEDOT:PSS has been studied by terahertz and infrared-visible spectroscopy. The neutralization of conducting polymer poly (3, 4 ethylenedioxythiophene): poly (stylene sulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS) decreased the carrier concentration and mobility, which lowered the electrical conductivity of PEDOT: PSS by five orders of magnitude with increasing pH from 1.7 to 11.7.

    In this study, we have investigated the temperature dependence of the optical conductivity of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly(styrene-sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) films measured by the combination of THz and infrared-visible spectroscopy to understand the effect of the ethylene glycol (EG) on the carrier transport. The addition of EG to the PEDOT:PSS colloidal dispersion significantly improve the dc conductivity of PEDOT:PSS film due to the increase of the crystallinity and the change of the morphology in PEDOT:PSS films. The temperature dependences of THz conductivities was discussed using the localization modified Drude (LD) model describing the weakly localized carrier behavior and the series sequence of free and hopping carrier (SSFHC) model. LD model analysis suggests that the carrier delocalization by the addition of EG improve the carrier mobility and DC conductivity. On the other hand, SSFHC model revealed that the macroscopic carrier transport of PEDOT:PSS was dominated by the hopping conduction between PEDOT nano-crystals where the metallic transport were realized.

    This paper describes a wireless humidity sensor that employs the mechanical resonance frequency, fr, change in a magnetic ribbon coated with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) doped with poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT/PSS). PEDOT/PSS expands or contracts by several percentage when it absorbs or desorbs water vapor, and so the curvature, 1/R, of the ribbon varies in response to changes in relative humidity, RH. It is also proved that fr is proportional to 1/R. Consequently, RH can be detected by monitoring the fr using a pickup coil placed away from the ribbon; fr changes from 68 kHz at RH = 87% to 148 kHz at RH = 0%.     Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) doped with poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT/PSS) was synthesized by oxidative polymerization and pH dependence of structure and electrical conductivity of the cast films were investigated by means of UV-vis-NIR, XRD, AFM analyses, and four-point technique. It was found that the neutralization of PEDOT/PSS with NaOH decreased the absorption of bipolarons representing the PEDOT in the highly doped state and disrupted the π-π stacking of the PEDOT crystalline structure, which lowered the electrical conductivity by six orders of magnitude with increasing the pH from 1.7 to 13.

    Stretchable and highly conductive films made of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) doped with poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT/PSS) were prepared by casting the PEDOT/PSS aqueous dispersion as colloidal gel particles containing xylitol and subsequent heating. The electrical conductivity and elongation at break of the PEDOT/PSS film containing 50 wt% of xylitol significantly increased from 0.46 S/cm to 114 S/cm and from 4% to 33%, respectively, by heating at 140 °C in air for 1 h. It was found that the xylitol had two functions as (i) plasticizer preventing hydrogen bonding and (ii) secondary dopant increasing the mobility of charge carriers between the colloidal particles.

    Novel electro-conductive and mechanically-tough double network polymer hydrogels (E-DN gels) were synthesized by polymerization of 3, 4-ethylenedioxythiophene in the presence of a double network hydrogel (DN gel) matrix. The E-DN gels showed not only excellent mechanical performance, having a fracture stress of 1.42.1 MPa, but also electrical conductivity as high as 10-3 S cm-1, both under dry and water-swollen states. The fracture stress and fracture energy of the E-DN gel was increased by 1.7 and 3.4 times, respectively, as compared with the DN gel. From scanning electron microscope and AFM observations, it was found that electro-conductive poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) was incorporated into DN gel matrix, apparently due to the formation of a poly-ion complex with sulfonic acid group of the DN gel network. Thus, PEDOT incorporated into the DN gel matrix greatly improves not only electronic conductivity, but also mechanical properties, reinforcing the double network gel matrix.     Highly conductive films made of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) doped with poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT/PSS) were prepared by casting the PEDOT/PSS aqueous dispersion of colloidal particles containing ethylene glycol (EG). By addition of 3% of EG, the electrical conductivity was significantly increased from 3 to 430 S/cm. The EG was crucially important for (i) removal of the insulating PSS from the surface of the PEDOT/PSS particles, (ii) crystallization of PEDOT molecules, and (iii) aggregation of the particles, which improved both intra-and inter-particle transfer of charge carriers. A further increase of the EG concentration, however, decreased the conductivity, which was due to the morphological inhomogeneity by the phase segregation.
