This study aimed to develop a laminar drain reinforcement (LDR) levee, which combines the advantages of drain layers and GRS technology, as a reinforcement technology of river levee that maintains the levee function even for excessive floods for a long time and has excellent earthquake resistance. We conducted laboratory tests for overflow and infiltration resistance of river levees with various reinforcement conditions such as earthen levee, crest pavement, concrete panels, drainage method, LDR levees. Earthquake-flood combined disaster experiments were also conducted for the river levees. The results suggest that the LDR levee has high resistance against overflow and infiltration, and compound disasters due to earthquake and flood. In addition, we carried out field survey on levee damage due to heavy rains and showed that the dimensionless cross-sectional area, which is a river flow capability index, is useful as an index for selecting important reinforcement points for river levee

The field surveys on macro-benthos such as gobies, crabs, bivalves and univalve shells were conducted at tidal flats around estuaries of the Kuma and Mimi rivers and the Tsuyazaki Bay. The community structure in the three areas were distinctly different, and seasonal changes were also confirmed. The long-term surveys conducted in the Kuma River indicated that ecosystems on tidal flat have ecological succession starting from disturbances. In particular, most of benthic species have suitable size for sediment, resulting that the change of sediment condition affects community structure of macro-benthos. We confirmed that two major disturbances occurred in the estuary of the Kuma River during our survey period, and the disturbances helped to expand the distribution of two pioneer species such as the jackknife clam. In the Mimi River, we constructed a habitat model of several benthic species and carried out simulation analysis of the suitable habitat for virtual flood.

To develop an automatic and continuous monitoring system for debris wood in rivers, we attempted to confirm whether image processing of thermography is available to detect the floating litter and debris wood on water surface in rivers. In this study, we conducted field measurement and laboratory experiments to compare the thermal and visible images for floating litters and evaluate the accuracy for detecting the floating litters. The results indicate that the image processing of thermography can detect the floating litters when there is the difference of temperature between water surface and floating litter. It is also noted that the processing processes with the binarization and sobel filter are useful to detect the floating litters by using appropriate parameters.

We investigated the physical conditions and biodiversity of tidal flats around the estuary of the Kuma River. The deconstruction of a high-dam located approximately 20 km upstream from the river mouth begun in 2012, therefore we selected the river mouth as our survey area with the expectation of sediment outflow from the removed dam. The increase in base ground level in tidal flats mostly occurred in high water season, suggesting that sediments supplied from the river contribute to the homeostatic ground level height of tidal flats. Sediment composition in most sites had changed from mud to sand as the dam removal progressed, indicating that the sand which had previously accumulated at the dam eventually arrived at the tidal flats. Approximately 20% of the survey sites had faunal changes and an increase in species richness as dam removal progressed. We conclude that the sediment outflow from the river upstream contributes to the homeostatic mechanisms of the tidal flat ecosystem.

The aim of this study was to examine the influence of human development of thermal environment of subtropical estuary and evaluate the biological impact by the physicalchanges. The rivers in the Amami Oshima Is. which have contrastive environments in the estuaries were selected as study sites and physical investigation and 3D flow simulation were conducted and the results were compared to clarify characteristic of thermal environment of estuary with tidal flat. An endangered freshwater fish, Plecoglossus altivelis ryukyuensis called “Ryukyu-Ayu” were selected as index of quality of ecological environment which use estuary in their larval stages. Ecological impacts were determined by estimating the field survival rate of the larva in an experimental model and the density of the copepods statistically. With these physical and ecological models, we analyzed predicted effect of tidal flat restoration showed that the restoratio n would result in a two-fold increase in the size of the suitable habitat area.

Japan’s rivers are shaped by distinctive topography and abundant rainfall, and they face flooding and sediment supply escalation concerns under climate change. Small- and medium-sized rivers tend to catch unprecedented forces that exceed planned levels, leading to substantial widening and excavation. Thus, there is a demand for a method that is capable of managing significant flood flows over an extended period. The spur dike can maintain channel clearance by promoting erosion as well as providing bank protection. However, the effectiveness of this spur dike function has not been well studied in small- and medium-sized rivers and curved reaches. In this study, we evaluate the function of spur dikes in improving channel sustainability based on examples of small- and medium-sized rivers that have maintained their channel for more than ten years after spur dike installation. First, the applicability of the empirical rule was evaluated by comparing it with actual cases of erosion depths in curved sections in Japan. Next, one-dimensional simulations were performed to evaluate the sustainability of the section over a long period. Finally, a depth-averaged morphodynamic simulation, including the secondary flow effect, was applied to evaluate the location of the flow core and elevation changes due to the spur dike. The results showed that a slight difference in the ratio of river curvature radius to river width (r/B) caused the river channel to be erosive and sedimentary. The reasons for the difference were the cross-sectional expansion caused by the excavation of the bend and the difference in the plane flow regime caused by the shift of the flow core to the inside of the bend. Although it is structurally challenging to reproduce localized scour around a spur dike in a depth-averaged simulation, it is essential for designing to apply the simulation model and combine empirical knowledge.

    Abstract

River estuaries are habitats for a variety of organisms, including many temperature‐sensitive species; water temperatures in estuaries are affected by several factors as they are influenced by both terrestrial and marine environments. Therefore, understanding the factors that influence river estuaries are essential for environmental management. However, no information exists on temperature change at high temporal resolution and over a wide area; moreover, the relationship with environmental factors has not yet been clarified. Here, we have described the actual status of water temperature change in riverine estuaries and its relationship with environmental factors for a wide area of the Japanese archipelago. Our results indicated that 217 of 294 rivers showed a significant monthly increase in water temperature. The average annual change in rates of water temperature increase was the highest in October at 0.090°C yr−1 and lowest in February at 0.068°C yr−1. Furthermore, snowfall, air temperature increase, sea water temperature, and land use were identified as factors increasing the rate of water temperature increase. Factors influencing the increase in river estuarine water temperature varied from month to month—with meteorological factors being the strongest influencers from spring to fall, and anthropogenic factors in winter. Our findings emphasize the importance of considering not only meteorological and oceanographic phenomena, but also anthropogenic influences and topographic features to understand the pattern of water temperature changes in river estuaries.

The sediment release and deposition characteristics associated with sediment replenishment by outlet gate operation of check dam in the step-pool structured small stream (Kamogawa River in Fukuoka Pref.) were investigated. The basin was mainly consisted of sandy weathered granite and the check dam had been trapped 13,700 m3 of sediment in a mutual layer with sand and cohesive cray since establishment 29 years ago. After the gate opening on March 2017, approximately 12.1% of total sediment volume was immediately released and further 6.6% flowed out in the subsequent floods. Estimated suspended sediment (SS) concentration was reached to about 1200 mg/L in downstream. The sediment from upstream filled some pools in the steep section. It suggest that sediment release can influenced in change of land form and substrate characteristics even in the step-pool section.

A measure to reduce the environmental impacts of dams is a dam removal which has been conducted in Arase dam, Kuma River. However we have poorly understood influences of dam removal or construction on riverbed evolution in lower reach of dam. In this study, we attempted to clarify the response of riverbed evolution after dam removal or construction by data analysis for long-term monitored riverbed and 1D analysis for riverbed evolution under various sediment supply conditions. The numerical results indicated that the propagation process of riverbed evolution to the downstream direction seemed to be a kind of diffusion process. Using this results, we can simply evaluate the riverbed evolution in lower reach after completing removal of Arase dam.

For comprehensive water and land management, it is necessary to monitor related items like water level, discharge, water quality and sediment transport although bed-load transport is not generally monitored even in large rivers. For this, we examined the fundamental applicability of a simple evaluation method of bed-load transport which is calculated using observed data for water level, discharge, bathymetory and bed material, and bed-load formula like Ashida-Michiue formula. This method is applied to the calculation of bed-load transport in Edogawa River. General model for 1-D simulation of river-bed evolution is also applied for calibration. The calulated results of bed-load transport obtained by both the models were in acceptable agreements even though the bed fluctuation exceeded 0.5 m. It means the fundamental validity of the present simple method for bed-load transport.

Levee breaches occurred at a lot of rivers mainly due to overflow of extreme flood. However it is not clear what hydraulic and material conditions can cause failures of conventional levees or not due to the lack of field data on levee failures. In the present study, we conducted field surveys for levee failures due to overflow erosion and made database of the levee failures. In the field surveys, we collected hydraulic conditions like overflow depth, failure conditions and size of levees. The results indicated that 1) the levee breach appeared at overflow depth more than 0.5m, corresponding to the previous studies, and 2) degree of the levee damages was not appreciably related to the covering conditions of top and slopes of levees.

The Arase Dam on the Kumagawa River in Kumamoto Pref., Japan, has been subsumed under removal project as the first high dam removal in Japan, - a process slated to influence the downstream sedimentology. During the first stage of the removal, in April 2010, the dam’s gates were opened. In this study, we investigated sediment characteristics on the river and tidal flat and estimated the changes in sediment outflow using a one-dimensional uniform bed load simulation. A remarkable level of sediment coarsening was identified on the surface of the tidal flat. The deposition rate on the tidal flat, which was estimated by vertical profiles of sediment size distribution and bed load flux, corresponded to the opening operation of the dam’s gate. The bed load simulation of the Arase Dam’s reservoir shows that the gate opening could increase the sediment outflow.

Coupled one and two-dimensional (1D-2D) hydraulic models play a significant role in analyzing flooding problems to find possible solutions as they can reproduce the actual situations relatively accurately. This paper summarizes approaches to flood inundation analysis and mitigation with coupled 1D-2D hydraulic models of a small mountain watershed in Japan. A detailed flood inundation model including the effects of drainages, pumping, inflow from mountain subwatersheds and flood gates is developed using coupled 1D-2D hydraulic models. The model is applied to the inundation in Kubokawa, a small town in Kochi Prefecture, Japan on August 9-10, 2014. Simulated and observed maximum water levels along the river and maximum inundations in the flood plain are compared and found to be consistent. Causes of the flooding and percentage of contribution are quantitatively identified, and countermeasures to reduce the effects of flooding are proposed.

This study is to evaluate the long-term evolution of morphological changes in tidal flat focusing on a characteristic of water level changes at river mouth, where the water level is distorted and separate against tidal level during ebb tide. For the estimation relationships between the elevation change and parameters representing the water level characteristics, two-dimensional current models are developed and the relationships were applied to the field observation data. As a result, we found the elevation decreased from 60's to 90's and slightly increased from around 2005. The estimated changes of sediment volume on the tidal flat clearly corresponded to the sediment losing rate by dam trapping and sand mining with about 10 years delay.

Riverbank failures by overflow erosion are frequently occurred by extreme floods. However, studies of the relationship between hydraulic conditions, material conditions and levee failures by overflow erosion is insufficient, specially, the relationship between overflow duration and levee failures by overflow erosion. In the present study, we estimated overflow duration that is difficult to measure in the field surveys, by the one-dimensional simulation of unsteady flow. From that, a simplified estimation method of overflow duration is proposed. The results indicated that the simulation of this study can reproduce overflow duration in extreme flood. Furthermore the simplified estimation method of overflow duration is valid.

In Oct., 2013, typhoon no.1326 brought heavy rain, which exceeded totally 800 mm and showed 120 mm per hour, in Izu Ohshima. Then huge sediment disaster has occured in Motomachi area, located at west part of Izu Ohshima. In this study, we clarfiy building damages due to the sediment disaster. For this, we conducted field survey for bulding damage and inundation depth in the above area and also performed numerical simulation of mud flow to examine the fluid force on buildings. The results indicated that building damages in mountain and sea sides of the above area were caused by the fluid force of mud flow and channel clogging due to sediment and drift wood, respectively. The range of building damages in the sea-side area was limited 40- 60m from the Ookanazawa channel in the lateral direction.

The Arase Dam on the Kumagawa River in Kumamoto Pref., Japan, has been subsumed under removal project as the first high-dam removal in Japan. In March 2015, the dam crest on the right side has been removed with the first flushing and continuity of flow and sediment has been restored. In this study, we conducted elevation measurement with RTK-GNSS and SfM analysis using UAV aerial photo set. As a result of our investigation, we found significant scouring in the upper stream of the dam site caused by several times of floods (Qmax=2000-3000 m3/sec). According to our estimation, 1.5 * 105 m3 of the sediment on former reservoir (26% of total) are washed to the downstream and 1.8 * 105 m3 was found on the immediate downstream of the dam site and it created new sand bar.

Although the supply of sediment, nutrient and organic matter from inland has a significant role on morphology and water quality in coasts, there is little monitoring data for the material transport. In this study, we present a simplified approach for evaluating material transport from a wide range of land to coastal ocean and apply it to evaluate the material transport into Pacific Ocean from Tohoku and Kanto districts. The results indicate that the present approach with water-quality database under high-flow conditions and non-dimensional L-Q relation can give a good agreement with the observed data, showing the fundamental validity of the present approach. The evaluated bed load indicates that the suspended load was about 6 times bed load transport, of which 99 % were occupied in class A rivers.

SS Flux, particle size distribution and organic matter ratio under flooding conditions were investigated in the Kumagawa River in which dam removal operating will be conducted for the first time in Japan. The results showed 99% of SS were categorized into silt or clay and median diameter of particles had a tendency to be smaller than that of other rivers. The results of non-uniform sediment rating curve (L=aQb) analysis indicated that the coefficient b were closely dependent on particle size. Total SS transports into the estuary were estimated 179*104 ton from April, 2010 to July, 2012 and small silt (23.6~5.07µm) element had the best contribution.

Estuaries play an important role to create suitable habitat for larval and juvenile fishes but there are little study to evaluate human impact on this function. In this study, investigations of habitat suitability for Ryukyu-ayu, endangered fish species in Amami Oshima Is, were conducted in two contrasting estuaries focused on the physiological condition and feed resource distribution by using field observation and numerical 3D flow simulation results. As a result suitable area was strictly limited in the modified estuary and numerical experiment results support that tidal flat restoration can create twice area of suitable habitat compared present condition.

Spawning site conditions of endangered subspecies of Japanese sweetfish named Ryukyu-ayu inhabiting only in the Amami-Oshima Is., Southern Japan were evaluated with an in-situ measurement method of riverbed-scour potential to clarify substratum adhesion of riverbed. In the present method, man-made flow was occurred near river bed and the resultant scour depth was measured. The field survey using the present method was conducted in Yakugachigawa River in Amami-Oshima Is. The result shows that the present method was found to be more suitable for evaluating spawning site condition than a well-known penetrometer. The results also indicate that appropriate parameters for evaluation of spawning site conditions are discussed using scour depth, grain size and flow condition

Although the Sumiyo River has a similar size of basin and same inner bay to the Yakugachi River, it has smaller population of endangered freshwater fish called Ryukyu-Ayu, in Amami Oshima Is. Focusing on the upstream migration of the target species from inner bay, seawater intrusion measurement were conducted with GPS installed float, STD and ADCP. The result showed that the Yakugachi river has 6.9 times of total discharge from inner bay compared to the Sumiyo River from ebb tide to high tide. We speculated that the sill located on the entrance of the Sumiyo River is a blocking factor for seawater intrusion from inner bay.

Our target species, Ryukyu-Ayu (Plecoglossus altivelis ryukyuensis) are thought that they are facing on distinct because of high water temperature in estuary of their habitat on their juvenile stage. It is necessary for conservation to evaluate how that condition effect on Ryukyu-Ayu. The aim of this study is to investigate an impact on their habitat suitability caused by development in estuary. To evaluate this we tried to apply the result of survival experiment on Ryukyu-Ayu larva to actual sites. This means we built statistical model to estimate 24 hours survival rate (ESR) from the experiment results and calculate ESR using field observation data of water temperature and salinity. The results show The ESR in habitat of artificial estuary is less than 40% even though more than 80% in all observation point in natural estuary and that carry out 1 deg water temperature falling can provide about 20% ESR rising.

Urban development causes serious changes to watershed conditions by decreasing storage area, introducing pavement and channeling. As a result, the peak discharge has been increasing and the arrival time of peak becomes early. The purpose of this study is to investigate the state of retention facilities such as irrigation ponds and paddy area in Mikasa River watershed. The result of investigation shows the rate of the capacity of flood control of dam, ponds and paddy area are 37.1%, 14.6%, 48.3% and total capacity is 3, 063, 000m3.<BR>For the estimate of the storage facility effects, we applied the distributed runoff model considering ponds and paddy area effects. The result of calculation showed that the peak discharge at Sanno Bridge decreased 36m3/s by dam, 31m3/s by ponds and 36m3/s by paddy area.

Urban development causes serious changes to watershed conditions by decreasing storage area, introducing pavement and channeling. As a result, the peak discharge has been increasing and the arrival time of peak becomes shorter. The purpose of this study is to estimate the change of flood discharge by transition of landuse in the Mikasa River watershed with the effect of the existing storage facilities such an irrigation ponds. <BR>To estimate that we applied the distributed runoff model considering the landuse in 1900, 1950, 1976 and 1997 of the Mikasa River watershed about flood disaster in July 19, 2003. <BR>The result of calculation showed that the peak discharge at Sanno Bridge has been increased 27% for the last 100 years result from transition of landuse in the Mikasa River watershed.
